529 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND WELLS, William William was born in Norfolk, England on March 24, 1874. He served with the Mounted Infantry in the South Africa War for three years. William and his wife, Clara, were living in Markdale, Ontario and they had six children: Lydia, Verdon, Edward, Albert, Gilpin, and Kathaleen. On December 8, 1915, he joined the Army in Owen Sound, Ontario and was posted with the 147th Battalion. He was shipped to England on November 13, 1916 and then onto Le Havre in Normandy, France. On April 7, 1918, he was sent to the Canadian Hospital, Moore Barracks in Shorncliffe, England with severe muscle pain in his lower back and thighs. While in the hospital, he received word from the Commercial Cable Company that his wife Clara had passed away from pneumonia. William was discharged and sent back to Canada on January 21, 1919 to take care of his young family. William died on June 8, 1938 in the Christie St. Hospital in Toronto at the age of 73 and buried in Markdale Cemetery in Markdale, Ontario. His two grandsons, Donald and Robert, are members of The Royal Canadian Legion Waterloo Branch 530. WHITE, George George was born on March 17, 1896, in London, England. He arrived in Canada in 1906 living in West Williams Township with the Ging Family. George enlisted in the Army on December 13, 1915, joining the 157th Battalion and trained at Camp Borden. Due to medical reasons, he was discharged in September 1916. George returned to farming near Parkhill, Ontario. WEST, Leslie John William Leslie was born on February 28, 1899, in London, England to parents John and Elizabeth West. Leslie lived at Barnardo Home and came to Canada in 1910. He lived in West Williams Township, later in St. Marys, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army on January 9, 1917, joining the CanadianArmy Medical Corp. Leslie arrived in England in March 1917. He was injured on the left hand which resulted in the amputation of his thumb. Leslie arrived back in Canada on the SS Olympic being discharged in January 1919. He married Gladys Berry in 1924.
