517 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND TRICK, George George was born on September 5, 1890 in Bosanquet Township. On January 31, 1916, he enlisted in the Army with the 149th Battalion S.S. Unit Canadian Order of Forester. He served in England, France, and Canada duringWorldWar I. George was discharged on February 10, 1918 due to an illness he contracted. He contracted Scarlet fever and had a left leg injury, pleurisy infections. He returned and was in hospital in London, Ontario for months. Once George was released from the hospital, he returned to farming and passed away on August 3, 1965. TURTLEBURY, Stephen Joseph Stephen was born on May 28, 1921 in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, England to Joseph and Nellie Turtlebury. Stephen enlisted as “Boy Gunner” with the Royal Artillery on August 28, 1937 and then formally joined the Royal Artillery on May 8, 1939. He served out of Gibraltar as a Gunner on Merchant Ships and with the 27th Heavy Battery when he was ashore. After the war, he transferred to naval reserves and then took a full discharge on February 5, 1952 when he emigrated to Canada. His wife and son followed later that year. His initial job was a jail guard followed by working as a farm hand, then for ten years as a caretaker at Aurora Anglican Conference Centre where his wife Frances Josephine was the cook. He acquired his welder’s papers and worked in that field for a while before joining the Langstaff Jail Farm for a twenty-year stint as caretaker of the property. He finished his working career as a gardener on a private estate property in North York, and in 1986 they retired to Millbridge, Ontario where he passed away on September 27, 2003. Together, Stephen and Frances raised four children: John, Chris, Peter, and Joy. TURNER, Joseph August Joseph was born on June 8, 1879 in Sunderland, Northumberland, England. He and his wife Florence moved to Canada. Joseph enlisted in the Army in February 1915 and joined the 57th Regiment Peterboro Rangers. He served during World War I in England and was transferred to France in September 1916. He sailed from Liverpool on November 6, 1917 on SS Olympic. Joseph was discharged in February 1918 due to injuries that rendered him unfit for service. Joseph and his family moved to the Thedford area to farm. Joseph passed away in 1963 and is buried at Pinehill Cemetery in Thedford.
