513 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND TODD, David Samuel David was born in Penetang, Ontario on November 27, 1913. He joined the Air Force on May 2, 1941, then received his training at No. 6 Manning Depot in Toronto. After graduation, he was sent to England as a Wireless Air Gunner, with the rank of Pilot Officer. While David was in Bournemouth, the Germans bombed the area and the hotel he was in received a direct hit. He was severely injured and remained in hospital for several weeks. After convalescing, he was shipped back to Canada to be stationed at Camp Borden, but was sent to Fort McLeod, Alberta instead. There he was commissioned as a Flight Lieutenant and sent to Patricia Bay, BC and then on to Guelph Air Station where he became a Radio Instructor. Returning to Ontario, he was sent to Centralia, and was discharged on April 26, 1946. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, Defence Medal and War Medal 1939-1945. David and his wife Irene moved to Bicroft Uranium Mines near Bancroft in 1958 and then on to Elliot Lake. David passed away on December 12, 1962 and is buried in Blind River, Ontario. TODD, William Rutherford “Bill” Bill was born in Brantford, Ontario on January 12, 1951. His first posting was to Cornwallis, NS for basic training. From there he was shipped to Camp Borden, Ontario to continue his training with the Infantry. That same year, he was shipped to Calgary where his posting was with Communications Section. In March 1971, Bill was posted to Cyprus for seven months taking part in the peacekeeping operations with the United Nations. To this day, Bill is proud to have served with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. Bill was discharged in 1971 and moved to London, Ontario. In 1988, Bill accepted a position with the Central Elgin Fire Department and in 2002 he became the Fire Prevention Officer for the City of St. Thomas. In 2010, Bill was promoted to be the Chief Fire Prevention Officer for the City of St. Thomas, a position he holds to this day. He received the UN Cyprus Peacekeeping Service Medal, Fire Service Exemplary Service Medal 30 Years, and Fire Long Service Medal 30 Years. Bill is a 36-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Port Stanley Branch 410. TODD (RUTHERFORD), Irene Elizabeth Irene was born in Ingersoll, Ontario on August 2, 1916. When war broke out in 1939, she was working in Brantford, Ontario. Her two brothers, Albert and Robert, had joined the Royal CanadianAir Force and she wanted to do likewise, but women at the time were not allowed to enlist and so Irene was recruited in Hamilton into the Motor Transport section on November 20, 1941. After training, she was sent to #5 Service Training Station just outside of Brantford, providing transportation for mail services and the CO. She was then sent to Toronto to become a Corporal and then on to Yorkton, Saskatchewan where he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. In October 1942, she was sent to Calgary Headquarters to take Officer Training, graduating as a Section Officer. It was there that she met her future husband David Todd. Interestingly, the Governor General of Canada, the Earl of Athlone and his wife, Princess Alice (Queen’s Aunt) visited the Station and Irene was assigned to be her personal guard during their stay. Irene received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. She was discharged in Ottawa on September 28, 1944. Irene passed away in February 2000.
