499 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SUTTON, George William George was born on October 22, 1897 in Thedford, Ontario where he resided. He enlisted in the Army on January 2, 1916 and served during World War I with the 149th Battalion Regiment in Canada, England, and France. George sailed from Halifax on SS Lapland March 25, 1917 and arriving in Liverpool, England onApril 7, 1917. George was transferred to Canadian Forestry Corp and hospitalized three times. On March 13, 1919, George sailed home to Canada and was awarded the Good Conduct Badge. He was discharged on March 27, 1919. SYLVESTER, William C. William was born in Thedford, Ontario in 1909. He joined the Canadian Army in September 1939. William served during World War II in the United Kingdom and Northwest Europe as a foreman of works with No. 1 Army Troops Engineers. When he returned home, he worked in London, Ontario; Fort Churchill, Manitoba; Valcartier, Quebec and Chilliwack, British Columbia. He was promoted to commission rank Warrant Officer foreman of works No. 21 Work Company in August 1960, Headquarter in Ottawa. In November 1960, William passed away and is buried in Grand Bend, Ontario. SWAN, Clarence Edward Clarence was born in Huntsville, Ontario in 1908. He was a quiet gentleman and a hard worker that supported his wife and four children. Clarence joined the Armed Forces and went off to serve in World War II. He spent three years overseas and was given medical release when he was wounded, losing his right arm, and sustaining permanent damage to the right side of his face and jaw. As with many War Veterans, Clarence ended up with PTSD, and not knowing where to seek treatment, he soon turned to alcohol for release. His wife was unable to handle Clarence’s mental instability and had to leave the marriage, taking the children with her. His brother, Neil Swan, severed a portion of his land and gave Clarence a small lot with a cabin. Clarence was happy to have a place of his own and lived for there for the rest of his life until he passed away in 1975 at the age of 67.
