489 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SMITH, Edward Clement Edward was born on May 24, 1897 in Arkona, Ontario, the son of David and Margaret Smith. He enlisted in the Army on December 6, 1915 and sailed on the SS Lapland to England inApril 1917. Edward joined the 149th Battalion and served in France in November 1917 with the 18th Bn, then the 1st Battalion. Edward was injured with mustard gas in October 1918. He came home on the HMTS Empress of Britain. Edward was discharged in March 1919. SMITH, Nelson Nelson was born on November 8, 1891, in Arkona, Ontario, the son of Douglas and Jennie Smith. He enlisted in the Army on November 29, 1915 and served during World War I with the 135th Battalion Overseas CEF. He also served two years with the 27th Lambton Regiment. Nelson sailed on the SS Olympic in August 1916 to England and served in France on December 5, 1916 with the 15th Battalion. He suffered with gas poisoning as well as an injured knee and was discharged in April 1919. Nelson passed away on May 11, 1963 and is buried at the Arkona Cemetery in Arkona, Ontario. SMITH, Isaac Alfred Isaac was born on July 1, 1895 inWarwick Township, the son of William andAnnie Smith. He enlisted in the Army on January 3, 1916 in Arkona, Ontario and joined the 149th Battalion, 1st Depot and trained at Camp Borden. He was discharged as medically unfit and rejoined in June 1918 with the Western Ontario Regiment in London, Ontario. He was discharged in 1919 after having served in Canada. Isaac retuned to Arkona, Ontario, married, and farmed. He passed away on November 27, 1968 and is buried in Strathroy Municipal Cemetery.
