485 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SMAIL, Douglas Blake Douglas was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario on October 22, 1938. He enlisted in the Air Force in November 1958 and served with Squadrons 404, 405, 449, 427, 434, 430, 436 and 440 and HMCS Assiniboine, HMCS Annapolis in Germany, Newfoundland, Greenwood, NS; Shearwater, NS; Trenton, Moose Jaw and Ottawa. After his release in September 1988, he worked for the Department of National Defence in an engineering support role. He is a forty-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion St. Joseph Island Branch 374. SMITH, Albert Albert was born on March 25, 1889 in South Dakota, USA, the son of Jack and Maria Smith. The family moved to Arkona, Ontario to farm in the early 1900’s. Albert enlisted in the Army on December 18, 1915 joining the Lambton 149th Battalion. His unit arrived in England on the SS Grampian in September 1917 serving in France on September 24, 1917 with the Canadian Forestry Corp. Albert arrived home on the SS Scotian and was discharged on March 20, 1919. He married later that year to Lillian Clelland. Albert passed away in 1943 and buried at the Arkona Cemetery. SMALE, Howard N. Howard was born in Hensall, Ontario on June 19, 1921. He enlisted in 1942 in the Army and served in England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. He was discharged in 1945 due to being wounded. He and his wife Jean lived in Hensall, Ontario and raised their family there until he passed away on December 3, 1996. He was one of the first members of The Royal Canadian Legion Hensall Branch 468 in 1947 and served on various committees and awarded a Life Membership in 1984.
