481 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SIMON, Wilfred J. Wilfred was born in Kitchener, Ontario on September 27, 1918. Before enlisting with the Army, he played professional hockey. He enlisted in the Army with the Regiment Unit 1 District Depot and RCA 63 Battery on January 8, 1942. He served in the United Kingdom, France and Germany during World War II at the rank of L/Sgt. Wilfred was discharged on February 16, 1945. He returned home and started a family taking a job in a Brewery Company in Kitchener. He received medals such as: Distinguished Service Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, and Mentioned in Dispatches. He passed away on August 26, 1975. SIMPSON, Donald Oliver Donald was born in Dunchurch, Ontario on May 28, 1927. He enlisted in the Army on June 2, 1947. WO2 Donald Oliver Simpson was a proud member of Lord Strathcona Horse RC. He served in the KoreanWar from 1950 to 1953. He received the Korean Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Canadian Forces’ Decoration. He was a dedicated soldier and served his country well. Post war, he was a postal letter carrier in Barrie, Ontario. Donald passed away on May 9, 2009. SIMPSON, Alec Alec was born on April 3, 1924, in Chester, England. He joined the Royal Navy in May 1942 and was assigned to the Aircraft Carrier HMS Illustrious as an Aircraft Handling Instructor/Batsman. As the HMS Illustrious was involved in many operations, Alec was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, the Atlantic Star, the Africa Star, the Italy Star, the Burma Star, and the Pacific Star. The HMS Illustrious was part of The British Pacific Fleet joining Task Force 57, concluded operations in the Battle of Okinawa. He returned home to Blackpool, England in 1946. Alec came to Canada in 1952 and was very successful in the natural gas industry, and for recreation enjoyed the stock car racing in Toronto in his early days and playing soccer. Joan and Alec raised five children, Bill, Margaret, Alec, Carol, and Glenn. Alec passed away at the age of 71 on December 30, 1995. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 112 in Whitby, Ontario.
