He was a mechanically minded man, and his skills were required to help the war effort. He worked on the F4U Corsair aircraft as a fitter on an airbase called HMS Rajaliya in Puttalam, Ceylon (now known as Sri Lanka). The work at this airbase was challenging due to the climate conditions, and is depicted in a famous painting by Robert Taylor, “The Elephant of Puttalam”, an elephant named Fiffi who pulled Corsairs, through the mud for repairs and operations. Derek was awarded four medals, the 19391945 Star Medal, Pacific Star Medal, Defence Medal, and War Medal 1939-1945. He was discharged in 1946. After the war, Derek brought his skills to Canada, working for Fairy Aviation in Halifax, and then on to AV Roe in Toronto to work on the legendary Avro Arrow. The cancellation of the Avro Arrow project resulted in Derek returning to England with his family where he operated a hotel and then into manufacturing management for Duple Coaches in Blackpool. Derek passed away on May 24, 2013. SHOLDICE, Lorne Emery Lorne was born in McGillivray Township, Ailsa Craig, Ontario on November 7, 1894, the son of Joseph and Mary Sholdice.
