459 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SCHMIDT, Albert Gottlieb Albert was born in Kitchener, Ontario on October 22, 1914 to Edward and Magdalena Schmidt, along with four brothers and one sister. Albert married Dorothy (Schneider) and they had two children, Lorraine and Donald. He worked at B.F. Goodrich when World War II broke out. Sentiments were high and on June 13, 1940, he joined the Army with the Highland Light Infantry of Canada. He was sent to Nova Scotia for training and then to the United Kingdom, and on to Continental Europe where he was attached to the Medical Corps. He was discharged on January 17, 1946 and resumed his job with Goodrich. They added another child, Glenn, to their family. He retired from Goodrich with 32 years of service. In 1952, Albert, along with 99 other Veterans, obtained a charter from The Royal Canadian Legion to start Waterloo Branch 530. Albert served many years on the executive including President, the children were kept busy with odd jobs and his wife was a member of the Auxiliary. He was also a member of the KW Khaki Club. Albert passed away on March 7, 2002 and is buried at Parkview Cemetery. His name has been inscribed on plaque 6 of the Waterloo Legion Veterans Memorial Wall. SCHNARR, Larry Celestine Larry was born in Kitchener, Ontario on September 1, 1942 to Alfred and Myrtle (Jonas) Schnarr along with siblings Harold, Robert, Michael, and Sandra. Larry went to school at S.S. #1 Conestoga. On November 3, 1960, Larry Joined the Army and was assigned to the Second Battalion, BlackWatch (Royal Highland Regiment of Canada). Continental Europe was having many power struggles at that time and Larry was posted in Germany during the Cold War Era. He was discharged on December 12, 1963. He later married Karen (Hoerl) and they had two children: Jason and Deborah. Larry drove bus for the City of Kitchener for his working life, retiring on September 27, 1995. Larry remains busy, spending his time traveling, woodworking, hunting and fishing. SCHMIDT, Donald Albert “Don” Don was born in Kitchener, Ontario on November 8, 1938 to Albert and Dorothy (Schneider) Schmidt, along with siblings Lorraine and Glen. In 1958, Don joined the military with the 54th LAA (Light Anti Aircraft) Royal Artillery and became part of the civil defence, training for the cold war; he received an honourable discharge in 1971. His Father presented him with a legion membership for his 21st birthday. Donald married Audrey Davidson in 1962; unfortunately, she passed away in 1993. Don enjoyed his cottage in Riversdale on the Teeswater River along with his yearly hunting. He worked for Kitchener-Wilmot Hydro as a power lineman and retired after 39 years of employment. In 1996, Don met a widowed lady, Gail Douglas, and her three sons become a big part of his life. He joined in on Gail’s hobby as a canoeist. In 1968, the Kitchener Armouries closed up, so in 1969, Donald and 99 other Veterans obtained a charter for the KW Khaki Club which is now closed due to COVID-19. He received his 50-year medal from The Royal Canadian Legion Waterloo Branch 530 in 2011 and will receive his 60-year membership bar this year.
