435 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND RASPIN, Joseph Joseph was born in Scawby, England on March 9, 1877. He enlisted in the Army on February 10, 1915, joining the Eaton Machine Gun Battalion. He sailed on the SS Metagama to England where he trained. He arrived in France on February 25, 1916. Joseph sailed back on SS Scotian. He and his wife Maude raised a family and later moved to Bosanquet Township. Joseph passed away on May 10, 1957 and is buried at Ravenswood Cemetery. One month later, his wife passed away. REID, William “Roland” Roland was born on June 5, 1898 in Lieury Township, Parkhill, Ontario, the son of John and Elsie Reid. Roland was a blacksmith and farmer by trade when he enlisted in the Army in May 1918. He sailed on the SS Saturnia to England and served with the 7th Field Coy, Canadian Engineers in July 1918 and in France in September 1918. He was discharged in July 1919. Roland passed away in 1945 and buried in the Carlyle/Falkirk Cemetery. RAY, William John William was born in 1919 in Kitchener, Ontario. He was an apprentice electrician when he joined the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals in 1940 during World War II. Previously, he had served from 1937 to 1940 with the Scots Fusiliers of Canada. As a young Signalman, William participated in Operation JUBILEE - the Canadian raid on Dieppe, France. His courage there earned him the Military Medal (MM). The medal was awarded to Warrant Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers and non-commissioned members for individual or associated acts of bravery on the recommendation of a Commander-in-Chief in the field. Later, William was promoted to Lance-Corporal and was transferred to the 2nd Canadian Infantry Division’s Signal squadron where he was serving when he was killed in action on July 20, 1944. He is buried at Brettville-sur-Laize Canadian War Cemetery - plot XIV, row H, grave 3. He rests in the cemetery 14 kilometres south of Caen as one of the 2958WorldWar II casualties; 87 are unidentified. He left behind his parents, William and Freida Ray, and a sister - whose husband was killed in action in France on July 21, 1944.
