423 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND PICKELL, Baden Powell Baden was born on May 19, 1900 in Thedford, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army on January 11, 1916 during World War I and served with the 47th Battalion Force Canadian Expeditionary Force in France as an Auto Mechanic. While in a fox hole in a trench southeast of Ichy-en-Artois, France, prior to an attack, he was hit in the head by a fragment of enemy shell and instantly killed on September 26, 1918 at the age of eighteen. He is buried at Queant Communal Cemetery British Extension in Pas de Calais, France. His name is inscribed on the Thedford Cenotaph. PILKINGTON, James Ian James was born in Harrogate, England on December 28, 1961. He emigrated to Brantford, Ontario in October 1974 and joined the Canadian Armed Forces in October 1979. During his 25-year career, James was posted to Shearwater, Nova Scotia; Baden-Soellingen, Germany and Trenton, Ontario. During his tenure in Trenton, Ontario he was deployed three times to Camp Mirage in the Persian Gulf for Operation Apollo and Operation Athena. He went twice to Zagreb, Croatia and Ancona, Italy for Operation Airbridge and Operation Harmony (Sarajevo Airlift) and once to Nairobi, Kenya for Operation Scotch, the Humanitarian Airlift during the Rwandan Genocide. James was awarded the South West Asia Service Medal, General Service Medal, Special Service Medal, Canadian Forces Peacekeeping Service Medal and Canadian Decoration 1st Clasp. On July 6, 2004, James retired to Port Dover, Ontario with his wife Cindy and has been a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 158, Port Dover for ten years and seven years as Sergeant-at-Arms. PIERCE, Nelson Blake Nelson was born on May 4, 1896 in McGillivray Township, the son of Moses and Salome Pierce. He enlisted in the Army on November 1, 1915. His unit, the 70th Battalion 5th Canadian Rifles, sailed on SS Lapland in March 1916. Nelson landed in France in May 1916. On October 5, 1916, Nelson died of his wounds and is buried in Contay Department de la Somme, Picardie, France. Nelson’s name is on the West McGillivray War Memorial.
