399 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND NORMAN, Angus Angus was born in Kincardine Township, Bruce County, Ontario on February 8, 1868. As a young man Angus sailed on the great lakes, the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, passing around the Horn several times. He did whaling in the Bering Strait where he was marooned on the Russian mainland. In 1898 he married and returned to farming. After becoming the father of eight children, he enlisted on January 4, 1916 in the 160th Bruce Battalion going to England with the No. 2 Overseas Draft. Subsequently, he served in France attached to the Railway Depot and Forestry Corps that provided timber for reinforcing trenches and other necessary structures. He attained the rank of Sergeant and returned home in March 1919. He returned to farming and supported his family until his death on January 11, 1930. He is remembered by his family as a well-informed citizen who read to his family, shared his opinions with the editor of Review-Reporter and constantly enjoyed humorous inactions with his family and friends. NORTHWOOD, John Wesley John was born in Thedford, Bosanquet Township, Ontario in April 1898. He was a student when he enlisted in the Army on January 1, 1916. He joined the 25th Reserve Battalion, 4th Canadian Reserve Battalion, Unit 18 B. He left Halifax on the SS Southland to England. He was hospitalized with measles in April 1916, poison hand in June 1916, had a ten-day recovery from mumps in January 1917 and on August 22, 1918 he was recovering from gas and shell in Boulogne, France. John arrived home on SS Scotian and was discharged on March 21, 1919. NORTHWOOD, George Ernest George was born in Bosanquet Township, Ontario on August 28, 1895. He left Thedford, Ontario for employment as a banker in Cannington, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army on July 5, 1916, joining the Cobourg Heavy Battalion, No. 1 Siege Battery at the rank of gunner. He sailed from Halifax on October 4, 1916 and arrived in Liverpool on October 13, 1916. He served in France and Belgium with the 2nd Canadian Heavy Artillery. On March 30, 1917, he went back to England. He left England on the HMT Mauretania in March 1919 and was discharged on May 11, 1919.
