379 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MESSNER, Joseph Louis Joseph was born in Kitchener, Ontario on December 18, 1920 to Carl and Isabella (Buckel) Messner along with one sister, Marguerite. He joined the World War II effort with The Toronto Scottish Regiment, A Coy. After his discharge, he drove a horse and buggy with deliveries in Ayr, New Dundee and surrounding areas. He was introduced to Norma Messner by her brother Jack and after a brief courtship he proposed one bright, sunny day on one of his milk runs. Marriage followed on November 22, 1947 and off they went to Niagara Falls for a honeymoon. They raised five children: Michael, Anne, Cathy, Mary and Cecilia. Joseph was a third degree member of the Knights of Columbus and was employed for a while as a steward. Joseph passed away on August 20, 1969 after a brief illness with kidney disease and is buried in Woodland Cemetery in Kitchener. MILLER, Percy John Percy was born in Northwood, Ontario on September 22, 1896. He enlisted in the Army on March 3, 1916 with the 149th Battalion No. 1 Special Service Class A and served in Canada during World War I. Percy had a previous injury but was fit for home guard. He was discharged on March 4, 1919. He lived in the Thedford area where he worked for the Bell family farming as hired help. MILLER, Oscar Clayton Oscar was born in Kitchener, Ontario on June 6, 1925, to Herman and Mary (Miller) along with brothers Ermie, Harold, Harvey, Laverne and sister Dorothy. Oscar completed grade school in 1940 and entered high school at age fifteen, but only completed part of the first year. He worked at General Springs for two years and then joined the Army in July 1942 and was attached to the Scots Fusiliers of Canada. He served overseas in the United Kingdom and Northwest Europe. He was a rifleman for one year and then did general duties with the Provost Corps. Oscar was discharged on November 27, 1945. After World War II, he worked at the Quality Meat Market where he got his skill to work on butchering and then started working at J.M. Schneider’s Meats. Oscar married Catherine (Koch), one of their children, Ron, and his wife Anne, plus their three daughters, Amy, Tracy and Kristy are members of The Royal Canadian LegionWaterloo Branch 530. One week prior to his retirement, Oscar was rushed from the cafeteria at Schneider’s to St. Mary’s Hospital where he died on February 11, 1987 and is buried in Woodland Cemetery in Kitchener.
