373 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND McPHERSON, Edward Cunningham Edward was born in Ottawa, Ontario on December 14, 1926. He enlisted in the Navy on June 23, 1944 and served as an Able Seaman on the HMCS Brantford, HMCS Vancouver and HMCS Prince Robert in Newfoundland and on the Pacific. He was part of manual party, air plotter and R/T Air Display room. Edward received the Pacific Star, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the War Medal 1939-1945. He was discharged on February 6, 1946. Edward was assistant to the Bridgemaster on Tay Canal and was a cutter at the Perth Shoe Company. He resided in Perth, Ontario for 51 years and was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 244. Edward passed away on February 22, 1995. McRAE, Donald Hugh “Don” Donald Hugh McRae was born September 3, 1916 in Governlock, Saskatchewan. Don lived in Thedford, Ontario and worked as a truck driver and carpenter. He joined the Queen’s Own Rifle Canada, RCIC during World War II and his rank was Rifleman. Don was killed in action on October 20, 1944 in Belgium. He is buried in Antwerpen – Schoonselhof Communal Cemetery in Antwerp, Belgium. His name is inscribed on the Thedford Cenotaph. McQUADE, Archie Joseph Archie was born on April 21, 1918, in Toronto, Ontario. He was a proud veteran of the Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada. He joined its militia unit in Toronto in the late 1930’s and went active with them on June 11, 1940. He was assigned to D Company and after training at Camp Borden, Ontario; Gander, Newfoundland; and Sussex, New Brunswick he was sent overseas with his regiment onboard the HMT Strathmore in 1941. After training, he landed with his company on D-Day in front of the railway station at Bernières-sur-Mer. On June 11, the regiment’s illfated attack at the Le Mesnil-Patry resulted in 98 casualties included him. Invalided to England, he returned to his Company in September in action in Boulogne. He continued with it through France, Belgium, Holland and into Germany until war’s end. He was discharged on October 12, 1945, he later married his prewar sweetheart, Josephine Galka. Archie worked for the Post Office and was later hired as a Company Driver by AVRO Canada in Malton, Ontario. He worked for its Orenda engines division and rose to the position of expeditor engaged with the Arrow jet fighter project until the project’s termination in 1959. Archie passed away on November 24, 2000.
