363 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND McINTOSH, John Alexander “Alex” Alex was born in Clayton, Ontario on March 20, 1908. As a tradesman and foreman working in a locomotive works in St. Catharines, Ontario, he was called up for military service during World War II at the age of 34. He enlisted in the Army with the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps on August 26, 1942. After basic training in Cornwall, Ontario he was sent to Calgary, Alberta in November 1942 to continue training for overseas service. On July 28, 1943, he arrived in the United Kingdom transferring on May 15, 1944, to the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. He remained posted in the United Kingdom working as a machinist salvaging and repairing military equipment. He returned to Canada in February 1946 and was discharged on March 16, 1946. Alex was awarded the Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, Overseas Bar, and theWar Medal 19391945. In 1947, he married Hazel Massey of Calgary, Alberta. They relocated to Brantford, Ontario where Alex worked as a tradesman retiring in 1974. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Brantford Branch. Alex passed away on March 21, 1987. McINTOSH, William Edmund “Bill” Bill was born in Clayton, Ontario on October 3, 1915. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Artillery during World War II, on September 10, 1942, and trained on heavy artillery at Petawawa and Cornwall, Ontario. After a few weeks delay due to U-boat activity, his regiment sailed from NewYork City arriving in England in February 1943. His training continued with anti-tank guns leading to his transfer to the 51st Anti-Tank Battery which landed in Sicily, Italy on July 10, 1943. Bill participated in the Italian Campaign until March 1945, when his unit was reassigned to Belgium. When the war ended, he was serving as a Sergeant in Holland. Bill had returned to Canada and was discharged on November 6, 1945. He received the 1939-1945 Star, Italy Star, France and Germany Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, Overseas Bar, and the War Medal 1939-1945. He went on to a thirty-year career with Ontario Hydro heading up construction crews building high voltage power lines throughout Ontario. In retirement, with his wife, Grace Anderson of Chatham, Ontario, Bill settled in Perth, Ontario. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Perth Branch 244. Bill passed away on March 20, 2016. McINTOSH, Russell Watt Russell was born in Clayton, Ontario on September 27, 1918. He enlisted in the Governor General’s Foot Guards on July 4, 1940, training at various locations in Eastern Canada. Before leaving Canada, he married Edna Rollins of Almonte. He arrived in Greenock, Scotland on October 6, 1942, continued training on wheeled and track vehicles as the GGFG was transformed from an infantry to a mechanized armour role. In May 1944, he transferred to the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers arriving in France in September 1944. Russell served as a fitter in Belgium and Holland salvaging damaged armoured vehicles. He was hospitalized in February 1945 with respiratory conditions, transferred back to the UK and, via hospital ship, arrived back in Canada by late March 1945. He was discharged on August 10, 1945, but spent several years in hospital receiving treatment for tuberculosis. Russell received the 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, Overseas Bar, and War Medal 1939-1945. Eventually recovered, Russell held various positions in the Public Service of Canada retiring in 1981. He was a life-long resident of Almonte and area and for a time a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Almonte Branch 240. Russell passed away on July 28, 1997.
