359 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND McGIBBON, Alexander “Alex” Alex was born on June 13, 1872 in Belgrave, Ontario. He was living in Thedford, Ontario, married with four children and working as a carpenter. He enlisted in the Army on December 31, 1915 with the 149th Battalion during World War I. Alex had dropped ten years off his age to join. He was training at Camp Borden when he was released. He was discharged on October 11, 1916. The family moved to Vancouver, BC. Alex passed away on August 10, 1947 in Vancouver and is buried at Ocean View Burial Park. McINDOE, Douglas Haig Douglas was born on December 4, 1917 in Vancouver, British Columbia. At the start of World War II, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Royal CanadianArmoured Corps. He served in Canada, United Kingdom, Mediterranean Theatre, Northwest Europe and Palestine as Troop Commander, Intelligence Officer, Adjutant, Squadron Second-in-Command, Squadron Commander and Regimental Second-in-Command. He served honourably earning the Distinguished Service Order, 1939-1945 Star, Italy Star, France and Germany Star, Defense Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, War Medal 1939-1945, Mention in Dispatches, United Nations Medal, Canadian Forces’ Decoration and Clasp. Following the war, he remained in the Armed Forces in various responsible positions until his retirement in April 1968 with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. Douglas passed away on August 24, 1980. McGIBBON, Duncan Peter Duncan was born on August 23, 1898. He lived in Thedford, Ontario where he farmed. He enlisted in the Army onApril 6, 1916 in Thedford to serve duringWorld War I. He trained in London, Camp Borden, then back to London. Duncan had a few health issues. He sailed on SS Lapland to Bramshott and was assigned to the 25th Battalion. He became sick with pleurisy and trench fever in England. Later, he was posted to the Canadian Corps Reinforcement Camp in France. He remained there until authorities were informed of his correct birthdate, 1899. After his nineteenth birthday, he joined the 47th Battalion. On February 10, 1919 he was attached to #21 Army Auxiliary Horse Transport Coy, then returned to England in April. He was discharged on June 16, 1919. Duncan passed away on December 8, 1991 and is buried at Ocean View Burial Park in British Columbia.
