355 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND McCONNELL, John Francis Private John Francis McConnell was born on September 18, 1883 in Fergus, Ontario. He left his job as a pipefitter and enlisted in the Army on March 8, 1916. Eventually, he ended up on the front lines with the 4th Canadian Infantry Battalion. He served in Canada, Belgium and the United Kingdom duringWorldWar I. Sadly, he received gunshot wounds in both legs which necessitated doctors having to amputate them both. Two days later, on April 29, 1917, he died. He was 23 years old. John left behind a wife, Alice, of Preston, Ontario and parents John and Susannah of Garafraxa, Ontario. He is buried in Aubigny Communal Cemetery Extension in France, Plot II, Row J, Grave 23. McDONALD, Alexander Joseph “Alex” Alex was born on May 8, 1891 in East Williams, Parkhill, Ontario, the son of John and Mary McDonald. Alex enlisted in the Army on January 11, 1916, joining the 135th Battalion. He sailed on the SS Olympic to England in August 1916. He was transferred to the 125th Regiment arriving in France in November 1916 then to the 4th Battalion and was wounded in September 1917 by a gas shell. Alex returned home, discharged in April 1919. He married Florence Steele they lived in Parkhill area. Alex has since passed away and is buried in the Bornish Cemetery. McDONALD, Albert Alexander Albert was born in Thedford, Bosanquet Township, Ontario on January 4, 1894, the son of Alex and Mary McDonald. He joined the 18th Battalion and served in England and France during World War I. He was reported that he was hit by shrapnel and killed during military operations near Vis-en-Artois near Arras. Albert passed away on August 28, 1918 and is buried in Vis-en-Artois British Cemetery.
