345 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MAHEU, Henry Alexander Henry was born in Glen Nevis, Ontario on December 15, 1916. He enlisted in the Army on November 20, 1940 with the Three Rivers Regiment and served in the 12th Army Tank Battalion for five years during World War II. He spent four years overseas in Italy, France, Holland, Germany and England. He was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, Italy Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-1945 and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. He was discharged on August 20, 1945. Back home, Henry and Carmen (Fredette) raised three daughters in Orleans, Ontario. As a civilian, Henry worked many years for the Department of National Defence until his death on February 23, 1974. MAJOR, William Francis William was born on October 17, 1932 in Sandwich, Ontario. He went in the Air Cadets in 1950 then went into the Canadian Navy on February 19, 1951. He was discharged in February 1956. Bill worked in the Boiler Room and his rank was Leading Seaman Engineer Mechanic. He was on the following ships: HMCS Whitethroat (cable and minelayer), HMCS Quebec (cruiser), HMCS Haida (destroyer), and HMCS Buckingham (frigate). He went to Copenhagen, Denmark; Portsmouth, Swindon and London, England; Algiers, Algeria; Brest, France; Belfast, Ireland; Tortola, British Virgin Islands and Panama Canal. Bill then worked for the post office in February 1956 after he left the navy. From there, he went to work at the Windsor Airport in 1956 and retired from there in 1987. Bill met his wife-to-be Marylin while she was a nurse taking care of his mother in the hospital. They were married on January 19, 1957 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Windsor, Ontario. They have three children, four grandchildren and one greatgrandchild. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 143 and Branch 255 for a total of sixty years. Bill passed away on July 24, 2020. MAHEUX, Joseph François Joseph was born in Vallée-Jonction, Québec on May 20, 1943. He enlisted on October 18, 1960 and did basic training with R22ndR at the Citadelle de Quebec. He served with 6 Sig Squadron in Valcartier; Man Sig Squadron in Winnipeg; REGHQ Camp Shilo, Manitoba; Northad Sig Tp Germany and in Holland; 750 Comm Squadron in Lahr, Germany and in Belgium. He also served at 706 Comm Squadron in Borden, Ontario; 707 Comm Squadron at CFB North Bay, Ontario, Radar Control Wing NB, Gsar North Bay and 22 Wing Araf NB, and in Reserve Forces 764 Lancaster Squadron in Windsor, Ontario. He served with NATO and Norad units in Canada and in Europe. As a Comm Tech, he studied in Kingston, Ontario; Lackland USAF AFB Texas, Fort Gordon, US Army in Georgia and GCA Cryptologic Center in Kansas, Missouri. In 1971, he received the Canadian Forces’Decoration and subsequently awarded 1st, 2nd and 3rd Clasp. In 1993, he was awarded the MMM medal and was appointed Member of the Order of Military Merit by the Governor General. He retired from the Regular Forces in 1998 and subsequently joined the Reserved and promoted to Lieutenant in 2002 and served with 764 Lancaster Air Cadet Squadron and retired from the Reserve Forces in 2008. He is a 22-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Riverside Branch 255.
