327 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND LIDDLE, Robert Percival Robert was born in Cornwall, Ontario on December 4, 1893 to Robert and Jessie Liddle. In 1894, the Liddle family purchased a farm in Prince Township just West of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Robert grew up on the farm and joined the 51st Soo Rifles on August 17, 1915 to serve in World War I and then transferred to the 24th and 75th Battalion, Canadian Infantry. After receiving gunshot wounds in France, he was transferred to the Forestry Corps in 1916. He was discharged on June 8, 1919. Robert married Ethel Lowe in December 1919 and they had two children. Robert passed away on February 24, 1980 in Windsor, Ontario. LILLYWHITE, Frederick William “Fred” Fred was born on February 24, 1883 in Paris, Ontario. The family moved to Brigden where Fred joined the 27th Battalion St. Clair Borders during World War I. He enlisted in December 1915 and his unit sailed on the Lapland to England. In March 1918, he joined the 47th Battalion Canadian Infantry to France and was discharged in July 1919. Later, Fred resided in Thedford, Ontario operating the Lillywhite Jewellery Store. LIDDLE, Stanley Melville Stanley was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario on September 22, 1922. He was the second son of Gordon, a World War I Veteran, and Ida Liddle. He moved to Vancouver with his family in 1936. Shortly after World War II started, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force on April 15, 1941. He attained his Air Gunners badge, and held the rank of Flight Sergeant. In 1944, he was with the Number 7 Squadron flying in Lancaster bomber JA.718. On January 29, 1944, he was on a bombing raid to northern Germany when his plane was shot down. Stanley’s body was never positively identified as he was buried by civilians in a German cemetery in a small town northwest of Berlin. After the war, there was an investigation into his death and another missing crew member. There was a suggestion that there was a possibility that he was interned with a number of Soviet Soldiers in a Soviet cemetery in Rheinsberg, Germany. Stanley’s name is inscribed on the Runnymede Air Force Memorial in Englefield, United Kingdom.
