325 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND LIDDLE, Gordon Melville Gordon was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario on January 22, 1896 to Robert and Jessie Liddle. The Liddle family had a farm in Prince Township just west of Sault Ste. Marie. Gordon grew up and worked on the farm until he joined the 51st Soo Rifle on October 6, 1915 during World War I and then transferred to the 32nd Battalion CEF and shipped out to France. On June 14, 1916, he received gun shot wounds to his left leg. When infection set in, his leg was amputated. He was awarded the Military Medal on discharge on January 15, 1919 as a Lance Corporal. The infection in his leg lingered on for years and he had to endure further amputations. In 1919, he married Ida Paxton in Belfast, Ireland. Ida came to Canada as a war bride and they settled down in Sault Ste. Marie. They had three boys and one girl. One of the boys was to die inWorldWar II. Gordon passed away on July 14, 1984 in British Columbia. LIDDLE, Herbert William Herbert was born in Cornwall, Ontario on October 21, 1889 to Robert and Jessie Liddle. In 1894, the Liddle family purchased a farm in Prince Township just west of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. He worked as a forest ranger until he joined the 4th Battalion, Central Ontario Regiment in Niagara on June 30, 1915 and shipped overseas. While part of a patrol Northeast of Courcelette on October 8, 1916 (Battle of the Somme) he failed to return by the end of the day. He was presumed dead and his body was never found. His name in inscribed on the Vimy Memorial in Vimy, France. LIDDLE, Harold Vernon Harold was born in Prince Township on January 9, 1899 to Robert and Jessie. The Liddle family lived on a farm in Prince Township just west of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Harold worked aboard the boats on the great lakes and on December 1, 2015 he joined the 119th Overseas Battalion in Sault Ste. Marie and then was transferred to the 58th Battalion, Canadian Infantry. While serving in France, he was wounded several times. He was discharged on January 11, 1919 and returned to Sault Ste. Marie. Harold and his wife moved to Michigan where he worked for a heavy machinery company. He married two more times before he passed away on November 18, 1976 in Bakersfield, California.
