321 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND LEYES, Jerome Louis Jerome was born in Kitchener, Ontario on August 23, 1916 to Alphonsus Joseph and Mary Ann (Hoffman) along with siblings Norbert, Marie Theresa, Francis, Genevieve, and Dorothy. He joined the Army and was assigned to the Winnipeg Rifles and after basic training, he was shipped to Continental Europe where he served in England, France, and Holland. As a result of shell shock, Jerome was transferred to the Medical Corp mobile lab. The war was over on August 14, 1945, V-J Day, but Jerome was kept busy and was finally discharged in March 1946. He joined The Royal Canadian Legion in 1958. Jerome married Kathleen Martz and they had two children, Judith Ann, and Donald. Jerome worked for George Fines Men’s Wear for 25 years and then Kabels Men’s Wear for 20 years. Over the years, he earned the nickname of “Dapper Dan”. Jerome passed away on November 21, 1991 and is buried in Woodland Cemetery in Kitchener. His name has been inscribed on Plaque #4 of the Waterloo Legion Veterans Memorial Wall. LEYES, Norbert John Norbert was born in Hamilton, Ontario on June 6, 1913 to Alphonsus Joseph and Mary Ann (Hoffman) Leyes along with Jerome, Marie Theresa, Francis, Genevieve, and Dorothy. Norbert was working at B.F. Goodrich when on May 1, 1944 he joined the Army and was assigned to the Royal Canadian Electrical/Mechanical Engineers, and he was posted in Elgin Field and Barriefield. Norbert was discharged on May 23, 1946. From his discharge he went back to work with B.F. Goodrich until the mid-seventies. He worked briefly as a security guard until health intervened. Norbert married Elizabeth (Battler) and they had two sons: John Michael and Norbert Francis (Buddy), plus four daughters: Joanne, Joyce, Janine, and Jane. He joined The Royal Canadian Legion Waterloo Branch 530 in 1957. Norbert passed away at home on June 18, 1979 of a heart attack and is buried in the Parkview Cemetery, Waterloo, Ontario. Norbert’s name has been inscribed on Plaque #2 of the Waterloo Legion Veterans Memorial Wall. LEYES, John Michael John was born in Kitchener, Ontario on December 7, 1934 to Norbert John and Elizabeth (Battler) Leyes, along with Norbert Francis (Buddy), Joanne, Joyce, Janine, and Jane. John graduated from St. Jerome’s High School in Kitchener. On December 21, 1955, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and for the most part was stationed at Greenwood, Nova Scotia, as a Flying Officer and was discharged with the rank of Flight lieutenant in 1961. John then obtained his BA from St. Jerome’s College, University of Waterloo, and obtained his Masters and PhD degrees from Iowa State University. John married Esther (Alvarez) and has two sons, Michael and Matthew. He taught at the University of Wyoming and other U.S.A. Universities and worked at Statistics Canada in Ottawa for about twenty years. He joined The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 530 Waterloo in 1958 while he was serving, to be with his father Norbert and Uncle Jerome.
