319 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND LETCHER, Gary Robert Gary was born on December 19, 1940 in Galt, Ontario. He grew up in Burlington enjoying Easterbrook’s famous twelve-foot hotdogs. As a youth in the 1950’s, he joined the Royal Canadian Army Cadets. As a young man, he served five years as a reservist with the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry, attaining the rank of Sergeant. He loved being on the firing range and recounting tales of Camp Ipperwash. Gary graduated from Waterdown District High School in 1959 and Hamilton Teachers College in 1960. He received a BA fromYork University in 1970 and a B.Ed. from the University of Toronto in 1974. He taught for the York Region School Board and Simcoe County Board of Education, serving at BeverlyAcres, Crosby Heights, Hillcrest, Innisfil Central, Goodfellow, Forest Hill, and Assikinack public schools as teacher, vice-principal and principal. He also worked with the Ontario Public School Teachers Federation. He retired in 1996 to Tobermory. He was devoted to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and New York Rangers as well as playing euchre, backgammon, chess, woodworking, boating, fishing, and hunting. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion for a total of 35 years at Tobermory Branch 290 and Tara Branch 383. Gary died on November 24, 2019. LEWIS, Harvey Daniel Harvey was born on September 4, 1918 in McGillivray Township, Ailsa Craig, Ontario to parents Daniel and Clover Lewis who were farmers. Harvey had two years with the 1st Hussars, Military Reserve in Exeter, Ontario. He worked at Fleet Aircraft as a fitter and Remington Rand Aligner before he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force on June 26, 1942. Harvey had over thirty operational sorties over enemy territory and was a Wireless Operator and Air Gunner. On June 29, 1944, Harvey and his crewmen were left to carry out a bombing attack on Hamburg, Germany. He and the crewmen were never found. The Runnymede Memorial in Surrey, England has his name and also the family gravesite at Mars Hill Middlesex County. He received the WO Badge, Air Gunner Badge and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. LEWIS, Frederick Frederick was born on April 9, 1893 in McGillivray Township, Ailsa Craig, Ontario, the son of William and Elizabeth Lewis. Fred was a farmer and carpenter, he enlisted in the Army on December 20, 1915 in Parkhill, Ontario. He joined the 135th Battalion and sailed on the SS Olympic in August 1916. In England, he transferred to the 125th Battalion and his unit landed in France on December 5, 1916 with the 60th Battalion. Fred was killed in action on April 13, 1917, four days after his 24th birthday. His name is on the West McGillivray War Memorial.
