305 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND KNIGHT, William Earl “Tom” Tom was born on October 5, 1937 in Alliston, Ontario. He joined the Navy in 1955 as an Aircraft Technician and completed his basic training in Cornwallis, Nova Scotia. Tom then began his career and training in Shearwater, Nova Scotia. He was attached to VU32 Squadron, then transferred to VT40 Squadron, also in Shearwater, Nova Scotia. While stationed in Shearwater, Tom met his bride, Iola Marie Webber, and they married on December 5, 1958. In October 1960 , Tom decided to leave the Navy and return to Angus, Ontario. Upon returning to Ontario he eventually opened his own business in 1973 known as “Knight’s Ignition”. He and his wife had five children. Tom eventually closed the doors to Knight’s Ignition in 1988, and became employed with the Department of National Defense as a driver until his retirement in 1999. He was a forty-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Angus Branch 499. Tom passed away in Toronto General Hospital on November 28, 2015 and is buried in the Angus Cemetery. KOCH, Lloyd Wesley Lloyd was born in Kitchener, Ontario on December 26, 1923 to Wesley Louis and Edna Elizabeth (Broderick) Koch along with eleven siblings: Mildred, Ken, Robert, Violet, Elaine, Maureen, Patrick, Michael, Daniel, Louis, and James. Lloyd enlisted in the Royal Navy during World War II on July 15, 1941 and during the next six years made many trips across the North Atlantic up to Norway, across to Russia and on to England which earned him the 39-45 Victory Medal, North Atlantic Medal, and European Medal, Volunteer Service plus others. He was discharged in November 1947 with the rank “Able Seamen”. Lloyd married Katherine and they raised two girls, Heather and Kelly. He joined The Royal Canadian Legion Waterloo Branch 530 in 1959, and was a member for 49 years. He was a longtime truck driver for B.F. Goodrich. Lloyd passed away after a lengthy illness at St. Mary’s Hospital on May 14, 2008, at the age of 84. His name has been inscribed on Plaque #8 of the Waterloo Legion Veterans Wall of Remembrance. KNOWLES, Andrew Andrew was born on November 6, 1887, in Stonehaven-Kincardineshire, Scotland. He immigrated to Canada and lived in Mount Albert, joined the Mount Albert United Church. He was employed as a farm labourer in Craik, Saskatchewan and when he enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force Over Seas in Regina on May 6, 1913. He trained at Camp Hughes, Manitoba and on November 1, 1916, embarked from Halifax arriving in Liverpool, England on November 11. During his almost ten months in England prior to proceeding to France on August 27, 1917, he visited with his family. Unfortunately, Private Andrew Knowles was killed on September 28, 1917, in France and is buried at Aix-Noulette Communal Cemetery in France. Andrew was honoured in 1929 when his name was placed on a brass plaque at the park gates in Mount Albert. He is commemorated with his fallen comrades on the Mount Albert Cenotaph.
