301 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND KNACK, Charles Martin Charles was born in Preston, Ontario on July 10, 1888 to Henry and Mary (Gillow) along with four brothers and four sisters. Charles married Margretta (Evers) and worked on farming until World War I broke out. Charles and his brother, Amiel, went side by side to Galt, Ontario on January 16 and joined the Army. They were ordered to Montreal and shipped overseas together. He was assigned to the Central Ontario Regiment, 34th Battalion. On April 9, 1916, in the Battle at St. Eloi, Belgium, Charles was hit by shrapnel with fragments entering his throat and right eye. Seriously wounded, he underwent surgery to remove his damaged eye and shrapnel from his head. This started a move from hospital to hospital. On November 14, 1916, he was shipped back to Canada for further medical treatment, as well as to be treated for shell shock. Charles succumbed to his injuries on September 15, 1919 at the age of 31 and is buried in the Preston Cemetery in Preston, Ontario. Private Charles Martin Knack is commemorated on Page 537 of Canada’s First World War Book of Remembrance and will be forever remembered for his service by his great-niece, Kelly Knack. KNACK (GELLATLY), Shirley Elizabeth Shirley was born in Preston, Ontario on October 5, 1920 to Harold and Pearl (Eagle) Gellatly along with three sisters, Gwendolyn, Audrey and Constance plus four brothers, James, Reginald, Douglas and Bruce. Shirley attended Victoria Public School and Kitchener Collegiate Institute. On January 1, 1942, Shirley got involved with World War II by joining the Royal Canadian Air Force Women’s Division and she was stationed at RCAF headquarters staff at Hagersville, Ontario. Shirley was discharged with the rank of Corporal on November 13, 1945. Shirley married William Knack and they had one child, James. Bookkeeping became her occupation and in retirement she enjoyed playing bridge and travelling. She joined The Royal Canadian Legion Waterloo Branch 530 in 1994 along with her granddaughter Kelly Knack. Shirley passed away on November 16, 2014 at the KWHealth Centre at the age of 94 and is buried inWoodland Cemetery in Kitchener. Shirley’s name has been inscribed on plaque #8 of the Waterloo Legion Veterans Memorial Wall. KNACK, Roland Angus Roland was born in Preston, Ontario on January 16, 1914 to Henry William and Catherine (Werlich) Knack along with Waldemar and Valeria. In his youth, he became known as Angus; he enjoyed hockey, baseball and tennis. In 1944, Angus joined the Army and was assigned to the Royal Electric and Mechanical Engineering Corps and served in Ottawa, England and the Netherlands during WorldWar II. He was discharged in October 1945. Angus married Florence Amelia (Schlote) and they raised two children, Julianne and Peter. He worked for Werlich Industries until his retirement in 1971. He was a former Committee Member of Adjustments for the Town of Preston. He was a member of Preston-Hespeler Rotary Club, Probus Club and winner of the Paul Harris RotaryAward. Many years were spent dreaming, building and finally enjoying his retirement years at his cottage on Sparrow Lake. He passed away on November 9, 2008 and is buried at Memory Gardens in Breslau, Ontario.
