299 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND KIRKWOOD, Robert “Oliver” Oliver was born in Erin Township, Ontario on May 18, 1896, the son of William and Mary Kirkwood. He was a skilled machinist as a tool and die maker and was considered essential for the war effort. However, with the conscription crisis he was no longer exempt. He received his military medical in October 1917 and was drafted under the Military Service Act for active service on May 8, 1918. Hastily, Oliver and his fiancée Anna Nunn married eight days earlier on May 1. Oliver was assigned to the Canadian Engineer Training Depot with the rank of Sapper at St. John’s, Quebec. With a short training period in Canada, including a few days in hospital with the mumps in Amherst, Nova Scotia, Oliver embarked for England on August 3, 1918. On arrival in England, Oliver was posted with the 2nd Canadian Engineer Railway battalion at Seaford in Sussex. Following the armistice, he was posted to The King’s Canadian Red Cross Convalescent Hospital at Bushy Park in January 1919 and promoted to Corporal. Oliver returned to Canada on escort duty and was discharged on August 5, 1919. Robert passed away on November 4, 1971. KNACK, Amiel Lewis Amiel was born in Hespeler, Ontario on June 2, 1893 to Henry and Mary (Gillow) Knack along with four brothers and four sisters. Amiel was working in a furniture factory when World War I broke out and had one year of military service with the HLI in Galt. He joined the Army on June 16, 1914 and shipped overseas aboard the SS Hesperian on October 23, 1915. He was attached to the 18th Battalion and sent across the channel to France. On September 30, 1916, he was wounded by shrapnel in the left side. On October 2, he was wounded by gunshot to the left wrist and was sent back to England for better medical care. He was posted with the military police while receiving treatment. He was discharged on August 12, 1918 after being declared medically unfit due to his hand injury. Amiel was allowed to wear three blue chevrons (honourable mentions) earned during his service plus was entitled to wear the two gold wound stripes. He married Minnie (Morrow) and they had two children. He worked in the Preston Post Office and also did upholstering. Amiel passed away on January 31, 1985 and is buried in Parklawn Cemetery in Preston. KLOOSTERMAN, Harold Harold was born in Bergum, Netherlands on January 12, 1942. On December 12, 1960, he enlisted as a Reservist and was a Trooper with the QueensYork Rangers. Harold served in Canada and discharged on February 5, 1963. In 1964, Harold married Patricia Hannah and they had two girls. He loved the outdoors, fishing, camping, and hunting. They also travelled all over the world. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 426, Newmarket for 48 years. Harold passed away on December 11, 2018.
