297 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND KERRY, Ivan Gordon Ivan was born on November 3, 1925 at Strico, Ontario. On June 22, 1943 he enlisted in the Air Force and crossed the Atlantic on the Empress of Scotland arrived in Liverpool April 19,1944. He served with No 432 Squadron as a Tail Gunner on a Halifax Bomber in England. Ivan completed 36 sorties-nine daylight and 27 night over France and Germany. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross July 5, 1945 and was discharged on December 20, 1945. Ivan settled in Charlottetown and worked for Master Feeds and was Sergeant-at-Arms of the Prince Edward Island Legislature from 1997-2003. He was a staunch Promoter of Prince Edward Island. Ivan passed away on April 12, 2016. KIRBY, Herbert Harold Herbert was born in Guelph, Ontario onApril 16, 1896. He enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force and was attached to 169 Battalion on January 27, 1916 during World War I. He embarked for England on October 17, 1916 for more training before he was sent to France. After battles at Vimy Ridge, he sustained injuries in the field, and was shipped back to England for treatment before returning to Canada and discharged as medically unfit. Herbert returned to Toronto and worked as an electric typewriter mechanic. His grandson is a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Scarboro Branch 13. KING, John William John was born in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia on April 15, 1921 to William and Jenny Maude (Love). On September 2, 1939, John joined the Army in Nova Scotia and was assigned to the West Nova Scotia Regiment during World War II. His service during the war took him throughout Continental Europe and he was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, Italy Star, 1939-1945 Victory Star, Canadian Efficiency Medal, and the Military Medal for his courage during enemy fire. He had earned the rank of Sergeant, and on June 21, 1945 he was presented an honourable discharge. John and June Daisy (Watkins) had two daughters, Jan and Susan. Jack was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Waterloo Branch 530. He worked at Eaton’s, Schlichter’s, and Forbes. He was a 2003 Champion snooker player, to the tune that the snooker room at the Breithaupt Center in Kitchener, Ontario is named “The Jack King Billiard Room”. On December 14, 2014, John passed away at the Pine Haven Nursing Home at the age of 93. John’s name has been inscribed on Plaque #8 of the Waterloo Legion Veterans Memorial Wall.
