295 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND KERN, Harold George Harold was born in Kitchener, Ontario onAugust 23, 1913. He enlisted in the Army on June 8, 1940 and was a Machine Gun Instructor with the Cameron Highlanders, CanadianArmy Service Corps duringWorldWar II. He served in the first Canadian Detachment sent to Soest, Germany. Post war, he served in the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires. He was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, War Medal 1939-1945, Canadian Forces’ Decoration and Bar and the Commissionaires Long Service Medal. He was discharged on June 26, 1964. Harold passed away on April 1, 1989. KERRY, Herald Clifford Herald was born on August 23, 1921 in Cereal, Alberta. In 1938, they settled on a small farm on Scugog Island. His father and three brothers worked in a munitions factory in Ajax, Ontario. Herald then drove a truck. In June 1943, Herald and his brothers went to Toronto to enlist to serve in World War II. His brothers George and Harry were rejected for health reasons, Herald enlisted in the Navy and Ivan, at the age of 17, needed his parent’s permission to join the Air Force. Herald served with the HMCS Charlottetown. The ship was on escort for convoys. His job was to clear the ice off the antenna in the North Atlantic. After his service, he moved to Toronto and married then moved to Oakville. They lived there for almost fifty years and then moved Oshawa, Ontario to be closer to family. Herald attended many reunions with his crew and was in Charlottetown for the dedication of the third HMCS Charlottetown which ironically is where his younger brother Ivan lived after the war. Herald passed away on June 20, 2005. KERR, Roderick William Roderick was born in Buffalo, New York, U.S.A on February 14, 1890. He moved to the Thedford area in 1910. Roderick joined the Canadian Army on September 23, 1914, serving in World War I as a Sergeant in the 5th Battalion in France. He was previously reported missing, now for official purposes is presumed to have died on June 15, 1915 in the vicinity of Oblinghem. He is buried at the Vimy Memorial in Pas de Calais, France. Roderick’s name is inscribed on the Thedford Cenotaph.
