287 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND KANOLD, Donald Clarence Donald was born in Port Colborne, Ontario on March 7, 1926 to Clarence and Amelia (Pietz) along with two brothers, Robert and Keith. After completing high school in 1944, he joined the Army. He was sent to Meaford for basic training and assigned to the Algonquin Regiment. During the big push to the end of the war, he boarded a ship to England. Shortly after arriving, Donald was hospitalized with a high fever. When he was discharged from hospital, he learned that his unit had shipped out and then saddened to learn that there were casualties. After his discharge on August 5, 1946, Donald went back to school at Waterloo College University of Western Ontario and earned a BA. He married Doris Stalkie and they raised five children: Mary, Peter, John, Wayne, and Timothy. Donald taught school in Port Colborne for 25 years and then moved to Kitchener Waterloo where he was employed with Waterloo Region. He was a proud member of The Royal Canadian Legion Waterloo Branch 530. Donald passed away on September 7, 2006 and is buried in Memory Gardens in Breslau, Ontario. KAY, Brian Allan Brian was born on June 20, 1965 in Owen Sound, Ontario. In September 1986, he enlisted with the Air Force and served with 439 Squadron Trenton and 410 Squadron BAMEO Cold Lake, Alberta in Canada. In 1988, he received a letter of commendation for finding a crack on one of the spars of a stabilizer of a Boeing 707. It grounded the fleet so they could inspect all the planes. He was discharged from service in October 2006. Brian is a five-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Owen Sound Branch 6. KARGES, Robert Benedict Robert was born in Kitchener, Ontario on July 10, 1924 to Joseph and Donalda (LaFlamme) along with Arlene, Jerome, William, Leonard, Edward, and Bernice. On July 29, 1943, after high school, Robert joined the World War II effort with the Royal Canadian Air Force and was trained to be a Leading Aircraftman and spent two years overseas until he was discharged on September 7, 1945. Robert married Josephine (Scocich) and they had three children: Larry, Brenda, and Daniel. He worked at Carline/Labatt’s Brewery until he retired. In his retirement, Robert enjoyed his time with a variety of activities like golf, cards and comradeship he received from The Royal Canadian Legion in Waterloo with 66 years of membership. Robert passed away on January 21, 2011 and is buried in the Woodland cemetery in Kitchener. His name has been inscribed on Plaque #8 of the Waterloo Legion Veterans memorial Wall.
