275 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HUMPHRIES, Stewart McDonald Stewart was born on December 26, 1920, in Walton, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army on April 9, 1942, in Kitchener, Ontario. He moved through Camp Borden to Valcartier, Quebec, where he joined active service on August 10, 1942, in the 6th Division Amm. Coy. A.F. He was sent to Hastings Park, BC on November 9, 1942, and on January 26, 1943, assigned to base in Duncan, BC. He was shipped to England in the spring of 1944. Before his move to British Columbia, he married and his wife joined him in Duncan. When he left for England, he was expecting fatherhood that summer. Stewart drove an ammunition truck through France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany with the 4th Canadian Armoured Division Transport Convoy. He returned home in January 1946, to work in his family’s General Store and to meet his two year old son Bob. He later had two daughters. In 1967, he became the Postmaster of the Walton Post Office. Stewart received the 1939-1945 Star and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp for his service. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Brussels Branch 218 for 33 years. Stewart passed away on July 5, 1983. HUNTLEY, Verne Cecil Verne was born on January 25, 1896 inArkona, Ontario and was raised and farmed in the area. He enlisted in the Army on December 6, 1915 with the 27th Regiment and trained at Grosvenor, Camp Borden and Queens Park. Verne failed the overseas medical in February 1917 due to some health issues. He became corporal of the Lambton’s on March 2, 1917. He returned home to farm. Verne received a letter from MSA draft to have a medical in Sarnia, Ontario in June 1918 and found “A”. He reported to London in August 1918 as a private with the 1st Depot Battalion of the Western Ontario Regiment. He was discharged on January 15, 1919. Verne passed away in 1951 and is buried at Arkona Cemetery. HUNTER, Herbert E. Herbert was born on September 17, 1916, in Toronto, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army on November 6, 1942, with the RCASC Bridge Builders during World War II. Herbert served in England, France, Belgium and Holland until September 9, 1948, when he was discharged. After the war, he served as an Aux Police Officer in Leaside, Ontario for nine years until the amalgamation with Toronto then he was with the Volunteer Fire Department in East York for nine years. Herbert is a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 345 and Highland Creek Branch 258 for a total of 63 years.
