273 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HUGHSON, John Simpson John was born in Sheguiandah Township, Ontario on June 2, 1889. He enlisted in the Army on March 11, 1916 and served with the 73 Battalion during World War I. John was killed in action on March 1, 1917 in Souchez, France. HUMPHRIES, Alfred Edward Alfred was born in Bosanquet Township, Thedford, Ontario on January 19, 1891. He enlisted in the Army on January 10, 1916 with the 149th Battalion and served with the Canadian Expeditionary Force in Canada, England and France during World War I. Alfred received the British War Medal and the Victory Medal and at the time of discharge, on May 29, 1919, his rank was Sapper. In 1923, he went to Sarnia, working for C.N.R. Express. He was transferred to Oshawa and retired in 1953. He later moved back to Thedford. Alfred passed away in 1961 and is buried at Pinehill Cemetery in Thedford. The Royal Canadian Legion conducted the service at the graveside, The Last Post and Reveille were played by a bugler from Camp Ipperwash. HUMPHREYS, Alfred Cecil Alfred was born on October 28, 1895 in Beeston, England, the son of Thomas and Mary Humphreys. Alfred immigrated to Canada in May 1913 on the SS Arabic. He was working as farm labour near Arkona, Ontario. Alfred enlisted in the Army on December 27, 1915 in Arkona, Ontario and he joined the 149th Battalion. Alfred had a medical issue and, after training at Camp Borden, he was discharged in February 1917.
