261 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HILBORN, Howard Wilson Howard Wilson Hilborn was born in Bosanquet Township on March 9, 1919, outside of Thedford, Ontario on a farm. After he graduated High School, Howard worked in Forest, Ontario, later worked in Windsor as a service station operator for British-American Oil Co. He enlisted in March 1940 for the Army duringWorld War II joining the Intelligence Platoon of the Essex Scottish Regiment. He trained inWindsor and Camp Borden before going overseas. Howard was reported missing in action, later his family found out he was a Prisoner of War. When Howard returned home, he married and raised a family living inWaterloo, Ontario. Howard passed away April 2, 1975. HIRONS, Jack Keller Jack was born in Huntsville, Ontario on May 19, 1909 to Sydney and Alice Jane Hirons along with three sisters: Helen, June, Mario and five brothers: Noel, Glen, Keller, Bernard and George. On September 4, 1940, Jack joined the army and was posted to the Highland Fusiliers serving in Canada, United Kingdom and Continental Europe during World War II. He was discharged on January 19, 1946 with the rank Sergeant. Jack and Ruby Hirons had one child, Evaline. He operated his own grocery store in Winterbourne for many years and as a hobby he enjoyed fixing family and neighbor’s shoes in the basement of his house. Jack joined The Royal Canadian Legion Kitchener Branch 50 in 1940 then transferred to Perth Branch 244 in 1962 then ended up in Waterloo Branch 530 in 1977. Jack passed away in 1983 and buried in Memory Gardens Breslau, Ontario. Jack’s name has been inscribed on Plaque #2 of the Waterloo Legion Veterans Memorial Wall. HILLIARD, Thomas Thayer “Tom” Tom was born in Waterloo, Ontario on October 17, 1928 to Harry and Flora Hilliard along with three siblings. On September 18, 1944, at the age of sixteen, Tom joined the militia Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps and was assigned to the 12th Medical Co. 24th Field Ambulance. He was discharged on April 1, 1970 due to the retirement of his unit, and after 26 years of military training and comradeship with other soldiers in his unit, Tom achieved the rank of MWO. In 1970, he joined The Royal Canadian Legion Waterloo Branch 530. Tom and Mildred (Stahle) had four children. Tom delivered mail in Waterloo for Canada Post for thirty years. Upon retirement, Tom enjoyed the activities of Second Chance Campers, Easy Riders Cycling Club, and line dancing. His first wife Mildred passed away in 1994 and he found love the second time with Marion (Holtze). After a lengthy illness, Tom passed away on September 3, 2004 at the K-W Health Centre Hospital. Interment took place at Woodlawn Cemetery in Kitchener. Thomas’ name has been inscribed on Plaque # 7 of the Waterloo Veterans Memorial Wall.
