255 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HENDERSON, George “Clifford” Clifford was born in Derby, Grey County, Ontario on January 7, 1899. He enlisted in 1918 with the Royal Canadian Air Force and served in Canada until his discharge in September 1918. He moved to Thedford, Ontario where he married, raised a family, and was the town clerk. He passed away on November 15, 1965 and is buried at Pinehill Cemetery in Thedford. HEPBURN, George Henry George was born on January 3, 1923 in Chesley, Ontario and joined the Royal Regiment of Canada on September 24, 1941. He served in Canada, United Kingdom and Continental Europe. Sgt. Hepburn was wounded on April 25, 1945 near the City of Groningen, Netherlands just days before Germany unconditionally surrendered its military forces to the Allies on VE Day. He convalesced in England and was then transported to Canada where he spent two years convalescing in Christie Street Hospital in Toronto. He was discharged on September 14, 1945. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 140 in Clinton, Ontario. George passed away on October 13, 1982. HENRY, Douglas Burns Douglas was born on May 8, 1921 in Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom. His father moved to Canada and opened a store in Medora, Manitoba, with Douglas and his mother following him shortly thereafter. He worked in the store for his parents as a clerk. He enlisted in Winnipeg on January 9, 1941 and received training as both a Driver Operator and Driver Mechanic. He served during World War II as a driver with Fort Garry Horse, Armoured Divisions in both Italy and Northwest Europe. After his discharge on January 26, 1946 he returned to Manitoba and married Dorothy Martin. Two years later Douglas, Dorothy, and their son, Richard, moved to Ontario, where Douglas took a job as a mechanic. He then started working for Grey Coach as a bus driver and for a while worked as a truck driver for Star Transfer in Toronto. Douglas and Dorothy raised ten children: Richard, Merrylynn, Robert, Ronald, Leanna, Reid, John, Ross, Susan, and Lissa. Douglas was an active member of The Royal Canadian Legion Richmond Hill Branch 375 and was a member of their Colour Guard. He passed away on November 27, 1984 and is interred in the Veteran’s section at Elgin Mills Cemetery.
