253 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HAWKEY, John Walter John was born on June 2, 1920 in Middlesex County, Parkhill, Ontario, the son of John and Beatrice Hawkey. John was a radio and electrical repairs and salesman. He had just started his own business when he enlisted on February 27, 1941 and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force 403 Squadron as a pilot. John received his Pilot Flying Badge in December 1941. As a result of a flying accident, John died of severe burns on January 24, 1944. He is buried at Blacon Regional Cemetery in Chestershire, England. The Aircraft was a Tiger Moth Mark II. HEBBES, Alf Alf was born on January 24, 1922, in Toronto, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army on March 27, 1942, with the 27th Armoured Sherbrooke Fusilier. Alf was very proud of his Regiment. He served as a gunner in a Sherman Tank in the United Kingdom and in Continental Europe during World War II until his discharge in February 1946. He returned home and married on May 27, 1950 and raised a family of 5. Alf worked as a bricklayer from 1949 to his retirement in 1987. He was a forty-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 344. He loved travelling to Holland for Liberation Week and was last over in France for the 75th Anniversary of D-Day. Alf passed away on November 3, 2019. HEATH, Paul Paul was born on Bell Island, Newfoundland on July 15, 1951. He enlisted in the Canadian Military on July 4, 1969 and through 38 years of service served throughout Canada and also did a four-year tour in the United States with the Canadian Defence Liaison Stall in Washington, DC. Paul served with the United Nations Emergency Force in Egypt in 1976 and with the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force in the Golan Heights in 1984. He was awarded the Canadian Peacekeeping Service Medal. Paul was also invested into the Order of Military Merit in 2003 by then Governor General Adrienne Clarkson. Paul retired from the military on September 4, 2007 to the Ottawa Valley where he resides today. He has been a member of The Royal Canadian Legion for 28 years and is currently the bar manager of Branch 550 in Cobden, as well as the Sgt-at-Arms.
