251 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HATT, Herschell Llewllyn Herschell was born on February 18, 1878, in Dundas, Ontario. He served in the 44th Lincoln and Welland Regiment in the Welland Canal Force for one year. He enlisted in the Army with the 98th Battalion in 1915. With the rank of Captain, Herschell did valuable administration work for Colonel Hugh Rose. He was skilled in accountancy. He was discharged in 1917. After the war, he purchased a fruit farm in Fenwick. His opinions were often sought after, and views were given freely. Herschell passed away on April 1, 1930. HAWKEY, John Rundle John was born on June 20, 1895 in Parkhill, Ontario, the son of John and Mary Hawkey. He enlisted in the Army on February 2, 1916 and his brother Homer also enlisted. John joined the 1st Central Ontario Regiment 4th Battalion. He sailed on the SS Olympic in August 1916 with many Parkhill young men to England. He was transferred from 135th Battalion to the 125th Battalion. John served in France in May 1917 and was wounded in November 1917. John was killed in action on August 8, 1918 and is buried at the Caix British Cemetery in Picardie, France. HAWKEY, Homer Jackson Homer was born on November 20, 1898 in Middlesex County, Parkhill, Ontario, the son of John and Mary Hawkey. He enlisted in the Army on February 16, 1917 with the 64th Battalion and sailed on the SS Magantic to England on November 26, 1917. Homer served in France in March 1918 with the Canadian FieldArtillery. He was discharged in May 1919 returned on the RMS Scotian. Homer moved to Toronto, married Wilma Lyons. He passed away on October 23, 1955 and buried at Park Lawn Cemetery in Toronto, Ontario.
