247 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HASKINS, William Henry Arthur Jr. William, of Berlin, Ontario, was born in London, England on December 9, 1893. He was a furniture finisher before he enlisted on January 12, 1915. He had previously served two years with the 24th Greys Horse, a Canadian Militia unit, in Waterloo and Oxford Counties. William sailed to England, arriving aboard the SS California on November 1, 1915. By August 20, 1917, he was promoted to Corporal. On July 28, 1918 he was in a trench near Arras with the other members of the 16th Canadian Infantry Battalion waiting to go over the top when he was wounded in the neck and left arm by shrapnel. He survived and was evacuated to the 3rd Canadian Field Hospital where he died of his wounds. He was the son of William and Alice Haskins of Kitchener, Ontario. He was 24 years old. William is buried in Wanquetin Communal Cemetery Extension, France – Plot II, Row B, Grave 23, one of 232 casualties buried there. HASSARD, John Martin John was born on March 14, 1921 in Acton, Ontario. He left University of Toronto to work at REL Enterprises (electronics and optical instruments manufacturing) and joined the Army as a radar specialist. He was promoted to Lieutenant at Brockville and was a radar instructor to U.S. servicemen in Boston and Texas. John was later assigned to the East Coast to hunt submarines in the St. Lawrence River. After the war, he was a teacher and Cadet Instructor. He was promoted to Captain Cadet Corps. John passed away on July 10, 1982. HASSARD, James Harvey James was born on May 20, 1917 in Acton, Ontario. He served as a Flight Lieutenant with 2416 Squadron in Ottawa during World War II. After his service, he went into teaching first at the Ottawa High School then at Western University as a professor at Aldhouse Teachers College. James passed away on July 15, 2010.
