245 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HART, Melvin Charles Melvin was born March 20, 1922, in Demaine, Saskatchewan. He is the third son of William and Edith Hart. Melvin was only eighteen years old when he enlisted at Wolseley Barracks in London, Ontario in June 1940. He trained at Camp Borden with the Royal Canadian Regiment, transferred to the Queen’s Own Rifles and received further training in Sussex, New Brunswick, then shipped overseas in July 1941. Melvin served in England, France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany. He was injured in a motorcycle accident and returned home in 1943 being discharged in March 1944. He received the Defence Medal, 1939-1945 Star, and Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. Melvin worked delivering bread for Weston’s in Kitchener, Ontario, and married Helen Arnold and had two sons Douglas and Donald. The Harts moved to Walkerton in 1963 and started Hart’s Grocery Store. When they retired, they moved to Point Clark and eventually into R-Villa, Ripley. He is a 58-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Walkerton Branch 102. HARVEY, George Francis George was born in Aylmer, Ontario on June 6, 1901. He enlisted in the Army with the 91st Battalion on April 13, 1916 while he was underage. His unit sailed on SS Olympic on June 28, 1916. He served during World War I in England then off to France. After three months in France, George was wounded in the left foot requiring surgery. He was in the Canadian Convalescent Hospital for five months. George sailed home on the Megantic. He was discharged on April 29, 1918. He married Jean Campbell and they moved to Thedford, Ontario. George had a barbershop and billiards for years. He was a well-known and respected businessman. George passed away in 1982 and is buried at Dorchester Union Cemetery. HARTMAN, Joseph Joseph was born in Radom, Poland on September 2, 1919. He enlisted in the Air Force on April 22, 1939. He was with the Royal Canadian Air Force Band when it accompanied King George VI and Queen Elizabeth on the Royal Tour/Royal Train in 1939. He was awarded the War Medal 1939-1945 and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. He was discharged on December 5, 1945. Joseph passed away on January 21, 2000.
