241 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HANDLEY, James Alexander James was born on July 1, 1919 in Stratford, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army on September 19, 1939 and served with The Perth Regiment in Canada, England, and Italy. He was discharged on July 3, 1945. James married Mary Lloyd from St. Marys, Ontario before going into service. They moved to Newmarket as part of Central Mortgage homes in 1954. He resumed his job in Toronto as Administrator at Ryerson Tech raising two daughters, Pat and Michelle, on Rogers Road until his passing on June 21, 1971. He was President of The Royal Canadian Legion Milton Wesley Branch 426 from 1963 to 1964. James received the Legion Meritorious Service Medal and several military medals. HARRIS, George Donald George was born March 5, 1938 in Reigate, Surrey, United Kingdom. He served in the Royal Navy from June 15, 1954 until March 4, 1968. He was on the training ship, Arethusa as a young boy. George was stationed at RCAF Namao, Alberta for a period of two years. He served on many of HM Ships including HMSVictorious, HMS Albion, and HMS Bulwark. During his time with the 846 Squadron while serving in Indonesia on the Sarawak Border, the Squadron was supporting the Gurkhas in their operation against a rebel band. They were detached to Kuching in Sarawak. George was discharged after his fourteen years of service with the rank of Petty Officer on March 4, 1968. He served in England, Malta, Singapore, Borneo, and Canada. After being discharged, he worked for Bristow Helicopters in Redhill, Surrey, England and was stationed in Africa. George immigrated to Canada with his family in 1974. When George arrived in Canada, he was employed by Great Lakes Airlines in Sarnia, Ontario. George passed away on June 28, 2002. HARLOCK, Harry Albert “Jim” Harry was born in Berlin, Ontario on January 31, 1911 to Harry and Emma (Schippanowski) Harlock along with siblings, Marguerite, Esther, and Lloyd. He served his county with the 24th (Res) Field Ambulance Royal Canadian Army Medical Corp fromApril 11, 1950 until April 12, 1955 and received an honourable discharge with the rank of Sergeant. Harry married Dorthy Wideman and they had three children, Robert, Darlow, and Jim. He worked for John Forsyth Shirt for 49 years and was a member of Waterloo Rod and Gun and had fifty years continuous membership with The Royal Canadian Legion Waterloo Branch 530. In his younger years Harry was very involved in Kitchener Sports Community. Harry passed away on June 23, 1992 at St. Mary’s Hospital at the age of 81 and is buried in Memory Gardens Cemetery in Breslau, Ontario. Harry’s name has been inscribed on Plaque # 4 of the Waterloo Legion Veterans Memorial Wall. Harry’s son Jim and grandson Jim Jr. are member of Waterloo Legion Branch 530.
