239 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HAMILTON (WRIGHT), Grace Lilian Lilian was born in Quebec on November 14, 1922. She signed up in the Army on December 1, 1941 in Kingston, Ontario and served at Fort Henry, where she was assigned to the Quartermasters Stores. She received the CanadianVolunteer Service Medal, War Medal 1939-1945 and War Service Badge. After her discharge on October 31, 1943, she became a Legal Secretary. In 1943, she met her future husband Mike who was also serving in the Army at that time. After her military service, they resided in Kingston and then moving on to Kirkland Lake, ON and then to Timmins, ON. During their residency in Weston, ON, Lilian joined The Royal Canadian Legion and served on many committees, including President of Weston Branch 213. For her many years of service, she received her Life Membership (LMSM). Lilian was laid to rest in Kingston on April 21, 2009. HAND, Orville Hilliard Orville was born on December 12, 1918 in Bradford, Ontario to Norman Weston from Kettleby, Ontario and Elizabeth (Libbie) Jane from Bradford, Ontario. On October 3, 1941 he enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force. Summoned to report to Exhibition Place in October, he was stationed to Trenton, Ontario then out to Davidson, Saskatchewan and back to Angus, Ontario. In 1942, he was told to report to Union Station to travel to Halifax where he would be on his way to England. Arriving in England he was stationed to Topcliffe, Yorkshire. He was assigned to be the Ambulance driver along with many other duties. He spent numerous hours driving the fields in the dark locating hurt soldiers. Orville was discharged in March 1945 arriving home on April 2, 1945. On October 30, 1946 he married Helen Doris Noble and purchased their first home in 1947 in Bradford. He was a co-founder and very involved with the growth of the Bradford Legion, later named Orville Hand Branch 521 in his honour. He served as President, Past President and all other offices over his numerous years of service. He served as Poppy Chairman for fifty years. Orville passed away on November 8, 2009. HAMILTON, John Michael “Mike” Mike was born in Bristol, England on June 17, 1922. He emigrated with his family in 1924, to Kirkland Lake, Ontario. He joined up in Kirkland Lake and got his training in Kingston, Ontario. He was shipped overseas to England and served in Italy from November 1943 to March 8, 1945 and took part in the Liberation of Holland from March 9, 1945 to May 8, 1945. He served with the Algonquin Regiment, HQ Signals and Royal Canadian Corps of Signals, 1st Canadian Infantry Division Signals during World War II. Mike received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, 1939-1945 Star, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-1945, Italy Star and France and Germany Star. After his discharge on November 8, 1945, he studied Engineering and surveying at Ryerson University. Upon graduation, the family moved to Kirkland Lake, where he was involved in the mining industry, then to Timmins with the gold mining. They moved back to Toronto where he was employed as a Superintendent in the construction industry. Mike joined The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 213 in Weston, Ontario. He was awarded his Life Membership Service Medal and served as the Deputy Zone D2 Commander. Mike was laid to rest in Kingston, on December 17, 1986.
