237 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND GRUNDY, Robert Frederick Robert was born in Kitchener, Ontario on April 16, 1924 to Albert Edward and Wilhelmina Ernestin (Czerwinski) Grundy. On November 10, 1942, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and was discharged on September 24, 1946 with the rank of Leading Aircraftsman. He worked many years on security with the SIS. In 1959, he joined The Royal Canadian Legion in Waterloo to be with his father, Albert, and was a member for 24 years. Robert passed away on September 10, 1983 and is buried in Parkview Cemetery inWaterloo. His name has been inscribed on Plaque # 3 of the Waterloo Legion Veterans Wall of Remembrance. HALEY, LeVerne Maurice Robert LeVerne was born on August 24, 1922 in Springford, Ontario. He joined up in London, Ontario on November 13, 1942. After his basic training in Toronto, he was sent to Fort Macleod, Alberta to begin his flight training at No. 7 Service Flying Training School. He graduated as a pilot from “Course No. 93” on March 20, 1944. He was sent to England as a pilot and trained on Lancaster Bombers, however at this time in the war, there were more pilots than was required and LeVerne transferred to becoming a Navigator. On occasional leaves he would head off to Belfast, Northern Ireland where he met Rita, who was to become his wife. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, Bomber Command Bar and War Medal 1939-1945. He was discharged on February 15, 1946. After the war, he returned to Springford where he farmed with his father, but he was more interested in the electronic training he had received overseas and found himself fixing radios and TVs for all the neighbours, a job which transitioned into a full-time business. He retired in 1984 and was a 20-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Tillsonburg Branch 153. LeVerne passed away on February 24, 2012. GURNETT, Desmond Arthur “Des” Des was born on June 26, 1926 in India while his father served in the military. He joined the Royal Air Force in 1943 and served in the South East Asia Command which included flying duties as a wireless operator. Desmond’s service unit was the 267 Squadron, 118 Wing, Staging Post Sumatra China Bay, Trincomalee Ceylon. After the surrender of the Japanese, the Japanese Armed Forces were still in control of the Netherland East Indies and Des served as a Bren Gunner while on convoy duties in the area until relieved by the British military. He was discharged in 1947. After the war, Des relocated to Canada and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1948 serving in various locations which included RCAF Whitehorse, Yukon. He served three tours in Whitehorse where two of his daughters were born. He was discharged for the second time in 1973. Des and his wife now live in a retirement community in Carleton Place and is a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 192.
