235 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND GRIFFIN, Bruce Manley Bruce was born in Coldwater, Ontario on December 25, 1898, the son of John Alpheus and Isabella Maria Griffin of Coldwater. On February 12, 1916, he and five of his friends enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He was eighteen years old and single. Private Griffin sailed on the SS Cameronia to arrive in England on October 28, 1916. After getting some training in England, he landed in France on November 29, 1916, assigned to the 1st Canadian Infantry Battalion (Western Ontario Regiment). He was wounded in action during the attack on Vimy Ridge on April 9, 1917 and wounded again on October 6, 1918. He was later awarded the Military Medal for bravery. He was repatriated to Canada and discharged on March 13, 1919. Of his five friends who had joined with him in Coldwater, four were killed in action (George Maracle-Hill, Andrew Durnford, Alexander Dunkin and George Woods) and the other one, Samuel Eplett, was wounded in action. Bruce passed away on January 16, 1975. GRUNDY, Albert Edward Albert was born in London, England on February 16, 1901 to Clara Elizabeth Grundy. Albert immigrated to Canada aboard the steamship Corsican and settled in Stratford, Ontario on August 3, 1912. He worked for the Canada Goodrich Company and Dominion Tire in Kitchener. Albert had two sons, Robert Frederick, and Donald Albert. When World War II broke out, Albert joined the Royal Canadian Engineers and was discharged with the rank Lance Corporal in 1946. In 1952, Albert joined a group of Veterans to establish a Royal Canadian Legion in Waterloo. A charter was obtained and the first board of Officers comprised of President, Walter W. Nichol; Vice President, James MacDonald; Secretary, Abraham D. Smith; Treasurer, Durward Preston; Executive, Fred Shanks, Albert Grundy, George Coyne and Firman Martin. Albert passed away on November 24, 1987 and is buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in London, Ontario and his name has been inscribed on Plaque #3 of the Waterloo Legion Veterans Memorial Wall. GRIGG, Leonard Leonard was born on October 17, 1894 in Dashwood, Ontario in Huron County. They moved to Thedford and he enlisted in the Army on December 21, 1915 to serve in World War I. Leonard was hospitalized with mumps on January 18, 1917. His unit sailed from Halifax on March 25, 1917 on the SS Lapland, arriving in England on April 7, 1917. Leonard was transferred to Forestry Corp 25th Reserve Battalion. His posting was with the 36th Company in France. His unit left Kimmel Park in Seaford, England on January 21, 1919. He was discharged on March 3, 1919. Leonard returned to Thedford where he married and raised a family. He passed away in 1964 and is buried at Pinehill Cemetery in Thedford.
