231 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND GRASLEY, Jason Mathew Jason was born in North Bay, Ontario on October 19, 1975. Being a military dependent, he travelled through Canada and Europe. Jason enlisted with the Navy and attended the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School in Saint-Jeansur-Richelieu, Québec in 1997. After graduation, he was posted to CFB Esquimalt, British Columbia where he attended Fleet School and qualified as a Naval Electronic Sensor Operator. Jason was taken on strength abord HMCS Regina and was involved in Operation Augmentation which included port calls to San Diego, Hawaii, Japan, Philippines, Australia and the United Arab Emirates. Jason was awarded the Special Service Medal with Peace Bar. He sadly passed away on February 22, 2000. GRAY, Robert Murray McCheyne Robert was born in Galt, Ontario on April 25, 1891. He enrolled in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in October 1915. His higher education and previous experience with the 29th Highland Light Infantry fromWaterloo County meant he was soon commissioned as an officer. He sailed to England on the SS Olympicand arrived in Liverpool on April 16, 1916. He joined the 46th Canadian Infantry Battalion and was soon in the front lines. He was badly wounded on November 24, 1916 with a gunshot wound to his right shoulder and again in the hand on April 17, 1917. His actions and leadership on September 27-28, 1918 earned him the Military Cross. He and his men were advancing to the Canal du Nord when they countered seven enemy machine gun nest. Under Lt Grays leadership, they overcame all seven. He was killed on September 30, 1918 while leading his men on an attack on the Douai-Cambrai Road. He was hit by machine gun fire in the thigh, chest, and head. Robert died of wounds at the Aid Station. Robert served in Canada, England, and France during World War I. He is buried at the Duisans British Cemetery, in Etrun Plot VIII, Row A, Grave 2. GRASLEY, John James John was born in Bruce Station, Ontario on May 22, 1918. He enlisted in the Army on July 30, 1940. He trained at Camp Borden, assigned to the Three Rivers Regiment, 1st Armoured Brigade, 12th Battalion. He shipped to Britain on June 21, 1941, training until deployment to Sicily on July 10, 1943. The Three Rivers Regiment B Squadron moved to mainland Italy by September 1943, advancing up the west coast of Italy. B Squadron, supporting the 2nd Somerset Light Infantry through Strada, Italy, encountered heavy enemy opposition. The tank John was driving lost a track and five members went missing in action, including Cpl. J. J. Grasley. John was moved by train as a Prisoner of War to Stalag 7A by Munich, Germany. Early in 1945, he and another prisoner escaped from a work detail outside the camp. Once back to Allied lines, John was moved to England until war’s end. John received the 1939-1945 Star, Italy Star, Defence Star, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Overseas Bar and the War Medal 1939-1945. John returned home to farm. He married and raised five children in the home he built in 1947. He lived there until he passed away on March 27, 2008 at the age of 89.
