225 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND GILLESPIE, Vera Vera was born on June 13, 1919, in Fort William, Ontario. She was the first woman in Fort William to sign up with the Army after enlisting in July 1942. She served in Victoria Park, Halifax, Nova Scotia in Communication. Vera met Charles Ker in the Service and married him on September 30, 1943. Upon her discharge in March 1946, Vera and Charles moved to Fenwick, Ontario and started their family. She passed away on November 5, 1954. GOLL, William William was born on March 1, 1896, in Grey County, Ontario. He was the son of Conrad and Minnie Goll. The family moved to Turnberry Township and when he was nineteen years of age, he enlisted in Wroxeter, Ontario on August 7, 1915. He joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force RG 150, Accession and later served in the 16th Battalion, Canadian Infantry, Manitoba Regiment. He shipped overseas and was killed in action on August 8, 1918, in Aubercourt, France, three years and one day after his enlistment. He was twenty years old. GODDARD, Dr. John Clarke John was born in Alberta on March 17, 1914 and enlisted in 1940 with the RCAF Medical Service and the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps. After serving in the western provinces with the distinction of Wing Commander, he was discharged in 1945. After the war, Dr. Goddard and his wife, Helen (whom he married in 1940), moved to Hensall, Ontario where he set up his family medical practice. He made house calls – his patients came first. They raised their family, Beth, Peg, John Jr., and Joan, in Hensall. He retired from his family medical practice in 1977. Dr. Hoddard was a charter member of The Royal Canadian Legion Hensall Branch 468. He assisted a lot of veterans adjust to life after the war. Dr. Goddard passed away on June 23, 1998.
