223 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND GETZ, Alexander Daniel “Alex” Alex was born on January 19, 1917 in Killaloe Station, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army onApril 20, 1943 and served in the CACRU Reinforcement Unit, Fort Garry Horse and finally with the Governor Generals Foot Guards as a Tank Driver Mechanic. He served in England, France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, and the United Kingdom during World War II. Alex was discharged on February 22, 1946. He was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-1945 and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. After his service, he was employed as a crane operator with the Ontario Hydro for over 33 years and a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Walkerton Branch 102 for 27 years. Alex passed away on March 26, 1998. GILL, Albert Edward Albert was born in Liverpool, England on June 19, 1913 into a poor family, was given to an orphanage and sent to Canada as a ‘Barnardo Home Boy’. Albert served in Continental Europe with the Dufferin and Haldimand Rifles after enlisting in September 1939. He then worked at Carling’s Brewery in Waterloo after his discharge in April 1946. Albert re-enlisted for Korea with the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps in August 1950. He continued as a demolition expert by disarming/demolition of mines, booby traps and bridges. When considering the hazardous nature of his responsibilities, his greatest and proudest accomplishment was that none of his 37 men were injured or killed. Corporal Albert Gill fought in two wars, received two honourable discharges, and earned nine medals, the ninth forty years after the fact when the Canadian Government authorized the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal for Korea. He then resumed his job at the Carling’s plant where he retired in 1978. He was a sixty-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion with many years on the Waterloo Branch 530 executive. Albert passed away in 2000 and is buried in Parkview Cemetery in Waterloo. His name has been inscribed on plaque #6 of the Waterloo Legion Veterans Memorial Wall. GIBSON, Raymond Earl “Ray” Ray was born on May 10, 1896 in Etherly, Illinois, USA. The family moved to a farm near Thedford, Ontario. Ray enlisted in the Army on May 20, 1918 and served with the Engineer Training Depot, Western Ontario Regiment in Canada and in England during World War I. He was discharged on July 3, 1919 and received the War Service Badge. He returned home and married. Then, Ray reenlisted in 1940 to serve in World War II. He served in Canada and in England with the Administration Transport Co as a Driver. He returned home in 1943 and worked inArkona, Ontario. Ray passed away in 1986 and is buried at the Arkona Cemetery.
