209 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND FORBES, William Martin William was born on November 11, 1921, to John James Forbes and Mary Bridget Moore Forbes, in Goulbourn, Ontario. The family moved to Timmins, Ontario to work in the gold mines. After attending Timmins High School, William apprenticed in drill sharpening. His attestation paper shows that he enlisted in Toronto, Ontario on August 27, 1942. He disembarked in the United Kingdom on March 16, 1943. On June 24, 1943, he moved to the 27th Canadian Tank Regiment, and the Sherbrooke Fusiliers. On June 6, 1944, William and his comrades disembarked on Juno Beach, at Bernières-sur-Mer. As they moved inland on June 7, 1944, the Shermans were attacked by German panzers, and William was killed in action, at the age of 22. He, and many others, were interred at the Bayeux Cemetery, and their names are inscribed on the Memorial Plaque. He had been awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. His mother was presented with the Memorial Bar, and the Silver Cross (which was located in 2016 and has been forwarded to a next of kin). FOSTER, Alexander Nicholas Alexander was born on December 30, 1887 in Holland Landing. He enlisted in the Army on April 19, 1916 as a widower leaving his two children at home with his mother on the farm. He had served previously in the 36th Peel Regiment (Brampton) for one year. Alexander served with the 58th Canadian Military Infantry and the 157th BN CEF in England and in France duringWorldWar I. On discharge, on March 31, 1919, he was a Private and received the War Service Badge Class A. FORREST, Frank Frank was born in Manitoba on December 22, 1905. He enlisted in the Army in 1943 and was trained as a Motor Mechanic, Bren Gun Operator and assisted in the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corp. He continued on after World War II with using skills as a bricklayer at the RCAF base in Clinton, Ontario. He was discharged in 1946. He returned to Manitoba to work as a farmer, but later returned to Ontario to live in Hensall with his wife Ethel and son Clarke. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Hensall Branch 468. Frank passed away on April 5, 1999.
