207 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND FLAHERTY, James “Jim” James was born in Kitchener, Ontario on March 17, 1925 to James and Violet (Winch) along with four siblings. During World War II, Jim served overseas with the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion, who were the only Canadians involved with the Americans in the Battle of the Bulge. James was severely wounded, which ended his war service. He served in Canada, England, and Continental Europe. After some time in civilian life, he rejoined the Army with the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps. In the 1950’s, it was discovered that a bullet had lodged just below his tailbone. Upon recovery, he was posted at various bases in Canada until retirement after 28 years of service. Jim and his wife Marjorie had four children. On July 28, 1972, on the scene of a collision in Kitchener, Jim inspired other bystanders to join him in freeing two men and a woman from a car, minutes before it exploded. He was awarded the Medal of Bravery from the Governor General of Canada for these actions. Jim passed away on May 21, 2008 at the age of 83. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Waterloo Branch 530 and his name is inscribed on Plaque #7 of the Waterloo Legion Veterans Memorial Wall. FLEMING, GrahamWilliam Graham was born on September 15, 1895 in Thedford, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army on November 16, 1917 during World War I. Graham sailed on July 28, 1918 and arrived in Witley, England on August 15, 1918 on the Cassandra. He served in England and France with the 4th Canadian Res Battalion and 1st Depot Battalion WOR. Graham was discharged on August 21, 1919 returning to Thedford, Ontario to farm and raise a family. Graham passed away in 1971 and is buried at Pinehill Cemetery. FLEMING, George Wesley George was born on January 9, 1897 in Bosanquet Township. He resided in Thedford, Ontario when he enlisted in the Army on May 20, 1918. He served with the 1st Depot Battalion and 47th Canadian Res Battalion in England during World War I. George sailed to England on July 28, 1918 arriving on August 15, 1918 at Witley. He returned to Canada on the Regina from Liverpool in 1919. He was discharged on September 22, 1919.
