203 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND FINNIGAN, Robert Robert was born in Belfast, Ireland on December 10, 1890. He immigrated to Canada, residing at Thedford, Ontario, working as a farmer. Robert enlisted in the Army on January 10, 1916 with the Canadian Expeditionary Force in Thedford. He joined the 149th Canadian Battalion and served in England and France during World War I. Robert was discharged May 24, 1919 for demobilization. He moved to Michigan from Forest, Ontario in 1924 and passed away on April 22, 1925 in Pontiac, Michigan from diphtheria. FISHER, Mervin F. Mervin was born on May 7, 1926 and grew up on a farm in Collingwood, Ontario. He moved to Toronto at the age of fifteen and joined the Active Service in May 1943 at the age of seventeen. He went to England at the age of eighteen in the Canadian Armoured Corp. He trained in England as a private in the Infantry and was sent to Belgium and transferred to Nijmegen where he joined the Essex Scottish Regiment. Mervin went into action and was captured and taken to a German Prisoner of War Camp, Stalag 11B. he was repatriated by Field Marshall Montgomery on May 8, 1945. Mervin was sent to Farnborough Hospital, Farnborough, England, where he recuperated and was sent home to Toronto. He was discharged in October 1945. He worked for Toronto Hydro and is a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Fergus Branch 275. FISCHER, Max Keith Max was born on July 8, 1935 on St. Joseph Island. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy in June 1955. He attended recruit school in Cornwallis, Nova Scotia then qualified as a storesman and went on to serve on HMCS Algonquin, CFB Shearwater and HMCS Donnacona, a land-based establishment for training and recruiting primarily for part time sailors for the Canadian Naval Reserve. One of the duties of the ship was to pursue and identify submarines off the coast of Newfoundland. At the end of his naval career, Max reached the rank of LSNS2. He was discharged in June 1960. Max returned to civilian life and moved to Toronto where he was employed as a door-to-door salesman for a bread company. He later had the opportunity to become a bus driver for Mississauga Transit which he did for 26 years until he retired in 1995. Max joined The Royal Canadian Legion in 1996 in Mount Forest and is now a member of Branch 182 in Thessalon.
