473 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND WELTEN, Julius “John” “Jack” Jack was born in London, England in 1907. He followed his brother, Ted, to Canada in the mid-1930’s. He enlisted in the Army in 1940 and served with the Essex Scottish Regiment in Canada, the United Kingdom, Italy, France, Germany and the Central Mediterranean duringWorldWar II. He was discharged on January 23, 1946 and returned home to Thedford, Ontario. For his service, he received the 1939-1945 Italy Star, France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. Jack married Helen Gibson and they raised a family of two children. In his civilian life, Jack worked at the Fire Hall at Camp Ipperwash and was a mailman on Route 4 for thirty-five years. Jack was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 278 in Thedford. He passed away on November 6, 1988. WHEELER, Gerard Walter “Ged” Gerard was born in Birmingham, England on March 11, 1923. He enlisted in Aberystwyth, Wales with the Royal Air Force during World War II in December 1942 and trained at Desford, Lestershire #7, EFTS, and was chosen to pilot the Tiger Moth. He was shipped to Canada and in 1945, he did more training flying the Cornell at Yorkton, Saskatchewan and the Twin Anson Mark V. In April 1947, he was demobilized with the rank of Leading Air Craftsman. He continued to live in England with his family until they moved to Mount Albert, Ontario. In 1977, Ged became a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Mount Albert Branch 382 and held many positions over his 21 years of membership: 1st and 2nd Vice-President, Service Officer, Honours &Awards Chairman, and Financial Auditor. He participated in many Remembrance Day ceremonies as flag bearer. He was honoured with a Life Membership in February 2006. Ged passed away on March 17, 2008. WESTGARTH, Arthur Alfred “Art” Art was born in Udora, Ontario on May 5, 1922. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force on September 18, 1940 during World War II. Corporal Westgarth was honourably discharged on November 5, 1945. His theatre of service during the war was Great Britain and he proudly wore the 1939-1945 Star, Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the War Medal 1939-45 on his Legion uniform following his swearing-in at the Sunderland Legion in November 1945. In September 1949, Arthur transferred to The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 382 and held many positions during his 67 years as a member, including Branch President, Poppy Chairman, Sergeant-at-Arms, 2nd Vice-President, Treasurer, Secretary and Sports Officer. He was awarded a Life Membership in 1988 and the MSM in 1985. Art passed away on September 26, 2013.
