431 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SUTHERLAND, James Douglas James was born on September 29, 1934 in River Hebert, Nova Scotia. He served with the Nova Scotia Highlands Militia from November 13, 1949 to March 29, 1954 and then joined the Canadian Army (Regular) on April 2, 1954. He served in Canada and Continental Europe until his honourable release on September 18, 1954. He received his SSM and NATO bar and the Special Service Medal for service in support of NATO. In 1961, he received his Canadian Forces’ Decoration. When he moved to Almonte, he joined The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 240 in 1975 and has continuously volunteered and served in many capacities within the Branch over the past 44 years. He has received numerous Certificates of Merit from both the Branch and the Ladies Auxiliary for his outstanding Legion Service and was awarded a Life membership in 1991. In 2012, he received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in recognition of his contributions to Canada. SYME, Ronald Albert “Ron” Ron was born in Almonte, Ontario on August 6, 1932. In 1954, he joined the Canadian Army Corps of Signals in Toronto where he began his training in Cryptography which was the job of sending and receiving coded messages of a Classified Type. This was a top-secret job. This was an ideal job for Ron as he was a gentle quiet man so suited to this career. Ron’s first posting was in Toronto starting his exciting life of travelling to many different army bases. In 1956, he was posted to Soest, Germany, Westphalia. He lived in a small village called Wamel, very close to the Mohne Dam, that was bombed by the British in World War II. Returning to Canada, he was posted to Toronto followed by Oakville, Picton Carp. In 1960, Ron was posted to the Congo with the United Nations and he received the United Nations Peace Keeping Medal as a Blue Beret. His last posting in 1991 was to Ottawa, Ontario, DND. In retirement, Ron joined the CNDA as a courier delivering classified equipment and messages all over the world including to our United Nations Allies. He also received the Canada Medal. He was a long time Member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 240. Ron passed away January 23, 2018. SWEET, Bruce Edwin Bruce was born August 14, 1950 to Leslie Forrest and Elsie Elizabeth (Heaton). He grew up in Windsor, Ontario with his siblings: Robert (Rob), Elizabeth (Beth) Barbara, Brian and Ronald (Ron). Bruce received his formal education at Walkerville Collegiate in Windsor, University of Windsor, Emmanuel College in Toronto as well as Ashland Theological Seminary in Ohio and he is an ordained minister with The United Church of Canada. Bruce is married to Victoria Elizabeth (Roy) and they have three children: Jasmine Lee, Jacob Levi and Melodie Carmen. He was a member of the Regular Force with both the Army and Air Force from 1979 to 1999 providing Chaplaincy services and guidance with UN Peacekeeping in Cyprus in 1981 as well as with the Canadian Airborne Regiment from 1981 to 1983. He was promoted to the rank of Major in 1985. Bruce is a currently a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Waterloo Branch 530, where he provides spiritual support to the membership, as well as tending to sick and shut-in members who are in need of a friendly visit.
