429 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SULLIVAN, Roy W. Joseph “Joe” Joe was born in Brantford, Ontario on February 16, 1912. He joined the Canadian Armed Forces on July 27, 1942 and served with the Corps of Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers in the #1 Canadian Engineer Equipment Workshop. He served a total of 42 months in the Army during World War II, including 25 months in England, France, Belgium and the Netherlands. His unit arrived on Juno Beach on August 1, 1944 to provide mechanical support. Specifically, Joe drove a tank recovery vehicle to remove disabled tanks from the battlefield and transport them back to the workshops for repair. He was wounded in the back with machine gun fire, which required 47 stitches. He also contracted tuberculosis during the war. Joe received the 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. He returned to civilian life after being discharged on February 11, 1946 and he and his wife, Shirley, raised seven children. Joe spent most of his post-war career as a sheet metal worker at Hussmann Refrigerator Company and enjoyed bowling and coaching minor league baseball. SUTHERLAND, Alexander “Alex” Alexander was born in Lanarkshire, England on January 27, 1895, to Elizabeth Sutherland. He was employed as a machinist. On April 19, 1915, Alex joined the military and was attached to the 36th Battalion. He sailed to England on December 23, 1915. Alex was posted to West Sandling in England. On February 7, 1916, he was promoted to Corporal and posted in France with the Ordnance Corps. On January 12, 1918, Alex was promoted to Sergeant and on February 9, 1918 he was transferred to the 156th Battalion. The Canadian Government was starting to demobilize the Canadian Expeditionary Force and he was sent back to Canada and discharged on January 5, 1919. Alex was a longtime member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 530. Alexander died at St. Mary’s Hospital in Kitchener on November 16, 1964, and his name has been inscribed on plaque one of the Waterloo Legion Veterans Memorial Wall. SUTCLIFFE, Robert Frederick “Bob” Bob was born in Bishopton, Quebec on September 23, 1933. He enlisted with the CanadianArmy Reserve onApril 4, 1950 in Cookshire, Quebec, serving in Canada. He was honourably discharged January 1, 1952, as a trooper. He also served from May 17, 1955 to August 1, 1955 in Reserve. He then enlisted with the Royal Canadian Navy on January 14, 1953 in Montreal, serving in Canada as an Ordinary Seaman and was Honourably discharged in Halifax, Nova Scotia on September 25, 1953. Bob is a 28-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Almonte Branch 240.
