427 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND STROUT, Alfred Carman Alfred was born on March 31, 1913 in Delhi, Ontario. Alfred attended Tillsonburg High School and was married with one child when he enlisted into the Royal Canadian Air Force. F/Lt Strout was the navigator for Lancaster bomber PB202 of RAF Squadron 582 when it was brought down by a German night fighter on August 28, 1944. All of the crew died when the plane dove into the surface of Forby Heath in Denmark while on a mission to Stettin, Germany. SUDDARD, William Thomas William Thomas Suddard was born in Toronto (York), Ontario on November 16, 1895 to Thomas Malcolm and Mary Elizabeth (Rowden) Suddard. He had two siblings, Henry and Sarah. William was previously a member of the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps and he joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force during World War I on June 19, 1915. After training, he was shipped overseas on January 29, 1916. Private Suddard drove Army trucks in France, transporting weapons, ammunition and supplies to troops. On demobilization, he was discharged on June 29, 1919 and returned to Canada. He married Clara Olivia Gomme and they had five children. William passed away on July 6, 1983 and is buried in Oshawa, Ontario. SUDDARD, Albert George Albert was born in Oshawa, Ontario on February 21, 1924 to William Thomas and Clara Olivia (Gomme) and grew up with four siblings: Allan Thomas, Robert Percy, Walter Melvin and Rena May. Albert joined the Army in 1942 and trained with the Highland Light Infantry of Canada. He arrived in Normandy, France shortly after D-Day. Serving in Canada, France, Belgium and Holland, he participated in operations including the Falaise Gap Battle, Battle of the Scheldt Estuary, the Battle of Hochwalde Gap and Cap Gris Nez in France during World War II. Albert was stationed in Nijmegen in the Netherlands during the winter of 1944-45. He has a keepsake Dutch coin that was dented when it protected him from a piece of shrapnel. He also has a scar on the side of his head where a bullet grazed him. Returning to civilian life in 1945, Albert married Evelyn May Forshee and they had three children: James Albert, Ronald John and Priscilla May. Albert was a self-employed locksmith. He also worked with sporting goods and bicycles with hobbies including golf and playing snooker. Albert has been a dedicated member of The Royal Canadian Legion Oshawa Branch 43 for 72 years.
